Title: Fall evening
Post by: MattBurt on October 11, 2017, 11:24:57 am
A lot of photographers I know won't even bother going out with cloudless skies like we had here last night. Often I won't either but I decided to take the dog and the 645 kit out to see if I could get some backlit fall color. The cottonwoods really glow when the light hits them right. This is from a hill overlooking town with some WSCU campus in the foreground and the San Juan mountains (Telluride area) in the distance. There is just a little snow left from Monday's storm that dropped several inches here and almost a foot around Crested Butte.

Wonderful color, Matt. Somebody's probably going to mention the yellow sky, so I'll head him off. I don't see it as a problem.

Nice understated color, good vista, great impression.

Thanks Russ. The sky was obviously much brighter than everything else so I bracketed and made this an HDR just to get it not completely blown out.
I don't mind this sky as it was pretty yellow with the sun just out of the frame to the right and I feel like this captures the look it had at the time. If I blended in a much darker exposure to make it more blue I don't think it would look right. I think some smoke in the air from California probably gave it a bit of an amber tint too.
I'd be interested to hear what others think about it as well.

We were just there a week ago today, but a bit more west, in Ridgway and the surrounding area.  Last Thurdsay was epic, and it now looks like we timed it perfectly before the snow hit.

I could move to that area, from Montrose to Ouray to wherever.  I'd never been to anywhere in CO other than Denver before and, unlike the Sierra that I know so well, it was almost like being the the Alps.

I've lived here quite a while now and I still love it. We go to Montrose for "big city" stuff like new appliances. :)
Ridgeway is probably between here and those mountain peaks in this perspective.

Nice light. Of course the sky is yellow, after all, that is the golden hour:)

Very cool. Looks good. I don't care about the sky, either.
