Does any know of a book or publication one can buy that goes into the details of ApplyImage and Calculation.

This was discussed years ago in this Forum. Do a Forum search and you may find it - I don't remember when or by who, but I do recall seeing some cogent explanation of both these features. Dan Margulis's books, especially the older ones like Makeready, but both Lab books as well, have a lot of practical examples of how to use Apply Image and Calculations in real world imaging situations. You're going to find a lot more useful information from Margulis than in the single rather limited example the linked pdf above.

Biedny et. al. is a classic, but Scott Kelby's Photoshop Channels book is more up-to-date and with broader coverage (2006 vs 1998).
