Title: NEW Rantatorial Ten Years and 65K In My Pocket - The iPhone
Post by: Kevin Raber on July 13, 2017, 12:05:48 pm
Just Published -  I have just published a Rantatorial "Ten Years and 65K In My Pocket (https://luminous-landscape.com/rantatorial/ten-years-and-65k-in-my-pocket/)" about the iPhone celebrating its 10-year anniversary. It's a device that changed the way we work. It certainly has changed mine. It also has had a major impact on photography. Truly a game changing device. I have included a few video clips from when the iPhone was introduced. Fun to watch and read. Enjoy.

Indeed a device that changed things. However, I can not get past the fact that where I live these things cost almost EUR 1,000... reflex of the society we live in?

Mind you, it is not the exclusive of the iphone, the new S8 is between EUR 800 and EUR 900, which is crazy. Folks spend that amount of money and then switch phones after 1 year? Good for stock no doubt...

IMO: it's a pathetic attempt at social climbing, and as a result, the ultimate price is enslavement to the device and the life it enforces.

I bought a Samsung several years ago and after changing a battery, it still works for anything I need from a communication device. Photographs? As I wrote here some time ago, never again: I was asked about making a large print of one of my distressed paintwork (hulls) cellphone shots for the owner of a large motor cruiser that lives in the marina. Clearly, I had to explain it wouldn't work within the context of a saloon, stateroom or anywhere else in close contact with a viewer.

They say yachting's the equivalent of tearing up banknotes in the shower; ditto cellphone images. Do it properly or don't waste your precious time on Earth. I tore up some nice banknotes that day.

Thank you Kevin for this Rantatorial with the keynote of Steve. What amases me most is that where iPhone-1 was a miracle at the time, just see how primitive it looks to us now in just 10 years. Where does that lead us?

cheers,

Great essay. Love the 54 feet / 65k pile of prints.  Who would know!

Steve Jobs had the insight to buy the technology, but remember it all started with Jeff Han.

The latest iphone is a steal considering the quality of the camera.

My wife just bought our first iPhone yesterday.
I hope she'll still have some time for me occasionally.  :(

Kevin, here is Bill Atikinson waiting in line for your phone 10 years ago.

He was pretty spot on with his predictions.

Wow, how cool is that?  Bill is such a character and so smart.  I had the chance a few months ago to hang out with Bill and Charlie Cramer.  Charlie took us to his church and put Chris Sanderson, Bill and me in the organ loft and then serenaded us.  It was a memorable evening. Always fun to catch up with Bill.

Rob, you just need to add a few accessories :)

Nah, I just need a conscience-lobotomy job; only takes five mintes, they say.

I wonder if that's tantamont to misrepresentarion? No, the commrcials stuff, not the minor surgery.

Some saner folks buy the phone unsubsidized and then use it for three of more years; till the hardware lags in practice, not just in lab speed tests. (Apple's iOS updates support models up to about five years old, so this can be done; some Android phone brands are more dodgy on OS updates.)  With that approach, the great majority of the total cost is the cellular service, so you might as well pay a bit more for a better hardware in your "pocket communicator".

As well as being a fine art photographer, I am in a techie profession in the UK and I see people using smartphones all the time. I estimate I see iPhone usage at no more than 10% normally. I, like most other people here in Europe use Android running on all sorts of hardware.

I was in a room today and half the people had iPhones and Macs. There was a perfect 1:1 correlation between those who were using Apple products and those who were from the USA!  Everyone else had an Android phone, and the other (European) computer users were using Windows or Linux.

Indeed... this default association between "smartphone" and "iphone" is an exaggeration. A bit like "mp3 player" and "ipod".

Apple have done an amazing marketing job... just as with computers, you pay twice as much for the same functionality. My friend's daughter has an iphone because all her friends have iphones. her mother has an android.

BTW, it seems that this thread has cursed me... my 4? year old HTC jumped out of my back-pack while cycling to work this am. Calling it results in going straight to the message service, so I suspect it has offered up its soul from under the wheels of a truck. Anyway, it seems to be possible to buy an equivalent replacement for 129€ from the local computer shop.

And if Dad has to pay for it all, he'll soon have a hemorrhoid. Maybe better he than she.

My pet beef at the moment is Telefonica, the Spanish telephone network: they make me sponsor their Formula 1 fun, they charge me around about €93 - €97 per month for the pleasure of my Internet connection. Which I can't have without a landline telephone I never use. The bundle includes my cellphone which I keep switched off, thinking of it in terms of an emergency aid should I feel the need at some time. Included is a set of tv stations that I already had covered via a terrestrial aerial. Oh, yes: I also get to see the number of any incoming call on the landline I rent. These are almost exclusively nuisance callers. I get 500 mins of calls on each device included. Clearly of great value as I am over twelve years of age, and seldom call anyone. However, should I want to call anyone outwith Spain, God help me with the bills for that joy. Shame the ¡ncluded calls are not transferable to foreign ones to the same total monetary value...

I feel myself getting ever more ripped off.

Perhaps I shall soon have the hemorrhoid instead.
