Title: Mesa Verde NP
Post by: rgs on June 21, 2017, 09:24:12 pm
I may have an opportunity to visit Mesa Verde NP later this summer. Is this a good photographic location? What areas should I look for?

Good spot to watch the Perseid meteor shower. Good dark sky, but 3/4 moon this year at peak on Aug 12th. Main issue is going to be the horde of visitors in almost all of the public areas and on the tours of the ruins during daylight. Not as bad as South Rim GCNP, but still busy. IIRC, the park gates open after sunrise and close around 9pm. There is an expensive lodge in the park if you want to stay close and can get a room. The ruins are interesting. A wide angle zoom is useful when touring the ruins.

Fantastic ruins and landscape there! Wide angles are a must but longer lenses for the overlooks. My trips have been between Labor Day and October frosts so I've never had problems with the crowds.
