Title: Go Big or Stay Home??
Post by: skirkp on May 20, 2017, 12:55:34 pm
Something about this article struck a nerve.  Antarctica may be an expedition destination, but dammit, Alaska is one of our states.  There are lots of ways to get there.  35000 frequent flyer miles should still get you to Anchorage, Fairbanks or Juneau from anywhere in the US.  The boat ride from Juneau to Glacier Bay is sheltered, and kayaks are a great way to see the animal life.  Sometime around 1990, future wife and I spent about a week kayaking up and down the inlet.  We were dropped off and picked up from a smallish boat, and guided by Jim DuFreyne's book, which is still in print.  My strongest memories were of paddling through tiny ice floes with seal pups established on them, and whales breathing at night in our cove.  Our camera equipment was either an M2 or a Nikon point'n shoot, can't remember which.  We missed our pickup by a day, but the peanut butter held out a little longer so we didn't suffer.  Kept our distance from the bears.  Never forget the experience and have pictures to show for it.
