Yeah, I know; sunsets are cheesy. Hackneyed. Overdone. Everyone takes photos of sunsets. Not many take sunrise photos, 'cos they're too lazy to get up early enough, but everyone does the sunset. No real skill involved, just point & shoot at the pretty colours. But I love 'em, just the same. And to make them work properly, you do have to work at it a bit. Most I see from the sort of photographers who in film days would have a roll developed with a Xmas tree at either end & a beach scene in the middle, are pretty bloody awful - black foregrounds, over-saturated skies ... Well we can do better than that, can't we?
Don't be ashamed. Post away. :)
-
Yes, I try to get out around sunrise or sunset (which is easier as you pointed out) not so much for the sunset/sunrise itself but how that light makes the landscape look.
Nice photo Bill.
Here's a recent sunset that was more subdued than many and I kind of like how that helps it not overpower the landscape.

Here's a sunset that's neither cheesy, overdone, nor hackneyed. I occasionally shoot a sunset. Don't usually get up early enough to shoot a sunrise. But I never show any of them except for this one. It's from the big fire west of Colorado Springs in 2012. I was on the east side of town as the sun was going down. I think I posted it once before on LuLa.

I even managed to squeeze in some human interest. A sunset image with layered meaning.

Thanks - it's a brutally overshot location (at least amongst locals), but it's been several years since the field bloomed this nicely. There's also development to the immediate left, so I don't know how many more years it will remain.

I will dare to make the point that none of the sunsets or sun rises I've seen in this thread are as appealing as my standard desktop background image which is freely available from a choice of many alternatives on my PC. ;D
Here it is. A sunset in Australia, but I don't know where precisely.

I think that shot was in-camera HDR which on my K-1 is usually pretty good but that artifact is in the raw and will be hard to fix. :(

Shame - and a little worrying, I suppose. I'd assumed it was overspill from a brush used to lighten the tree. Hey ho.

Looking at south rim Grand Canyon from Cape Royal viewpoint on the north rim. This looks more dramatic than it did to my normal human eye at the time, but what can I say except that I had great fun processing it to look like I wanted. Enjoy... or not. There are no halos. :)

I shot some single frames too (I think) so when I get a chance I may try again on a different file. But the light was changing fast so I hope I got one in the same light!

A friend of mine has often said "if I never see another sunset or cat picture in my lifetime, it will still be too soon". But a number of the images here are simply stunning, IMO. They clearly show the difference between the "ain't that purty?" snapshot and the practised eye and skill of a good photographer.

Yes, bad sunset and cat pictures are fatiguing to look at but good ones are just good photos which I always like to see.

Just a quick one from my smart phone during the week when I was at Uluru (I was at an event and having the real camera wasn't practical unfortunately as cloud there isn't that common).

From a couple of nights ago. Mosquitoes were thick but I was all covered up complete with gloves and a net over my head.
I was hoping for light to break through and light up the alfalfa tops but instead we got this very purple sunset.

Amazing sunrise and a great shot!
-
Thanks Matt. I remember getting my film back from the lab wondering if this exposure worked. It was a five stop grad on the sky to hold detail in the shadows. Patagonia is a great spot to shoot. I kind of prefer the northern Patagonia area for the diversity of shots and lack of people compared to Torres del Paine NP. Interestingly, Mountain Hardware licensed this image from me for a catalogue.

Late November sunrise near Lyons, CO.

Off the coast of Cairns, Australia. Yesterday / last night we dodged a cyclone (only a category 2), and this morning things are calm and I grabbed this quickly with my mobile phone.
-
"November Sky by Slobodan Blagojevic," on page 1.
Easily the best.
By taking the road less travelled, you've managed not to just fall into the trap of simply snapping what's right in front of you in a, well, factual manner. Add flash, add filtered flash, even better!
Digital landscape images so oft' suffer from over grad' filtered skies, burnt out suns (sometimes both) and a tendency to replicate what countless others have photographed for aeons before them. Slobodan has solved all these traps by including the foreground and adding flash. To my mind his shot is head and shoulders the finest shot here thus far (5 pages to date).

Yeah, sometimes a sunset can be too much and a little bit muted will work better with a good landscape. I think this one is just right.
I love that range for photography, skiing, hiking, and climbing peaks. So much good stuff for all of that and more.

I agree Colorado is my fav state. I just need to get a green card. Not sure they will give me one. Not sure the US has a need for another landscape photographer. 😄 I do like the Gunnison area, which is where I think you (Matt) reside. I try to get to Colorado once a year to shoot.
