I'm thinking of selling my Epson 9890 and replacing it with one of the newer SureColor P8000. I just want to make sure the new printers are compatible with Quadtone Rip (QTR). Will my workflow be the same ?
My Epson 9890 has new heads and capping station and is in excellent condition - what's a fair asking price ?

I don't believe QTR supports the p8000 printer yet.

I purchased a used 9890 last year and paid $1500.
It was a demo just under 3 years old with 2 months left on the 3 year warranty.
It was delivered from NJ to Pa for an extra $100.

You're correct, the "P" Series printers are not shown on the QTR site as being supported. However, I just did a search on the QTR Forum(Yahoo Groups) and found the following response from Roy:
"The QTR driver works on the new printers -- same software. But the
inks are different. I've attached a link for a folder with all this in one
place for the P6000, P7000, P8000, and P9000.
Simply download the zip file put it in QuadToneRIP/Profiles and open it.

This is for Mac -- on Windows just use the corresponding Print Model.

Hi Paul,
If you were using QTR with Piezography inks on your 9890, I would have to assume it would work equally on the P8000. However, we all know can happen when we assume. The only way to obtain the proper info for that usage is to ask Roy Harrington -- quadtone@harrington.com

No, at least not currently. Piezography requires using refillable cartridges with chips which can be reset, and Epson has made this essentially impossible in the new Pxxx printers which are sold in the U.S. (I believe Jon and Walker continue to research options, but there are no guarantees at present.) If you want to do Piezography, your 9890 is the ideal candidate for conversion.

He's right on both counts. Epson has put cart recognition software on the main board to lock third party carts out. The printer actually senses that a genuine Epson cart is not installed and then totally freezes up and you have to call a service tech. It's very serious this time. I don't think the piezo inks bother them so much, it's the cheap color ink out there that really pisses them off. Walker is trying to find a way to refill new Epson carts for the time being. They are asking people to save them. I would definitely use the 9890 for the best and most reliable piezography printer. The 9880 is also excellent but most of them are pretty old now. That is what I've been doing for five years with the 9890 and it is still working fantastic for that purpose. I wouldn't buy a used 9900 though. Wouldn't trust them.
