When I looked for a replacement I discovered the cheapest 725 I could find was 340. I paid 125 each for two of them five or six years ago. They aren't in production now. The Artisan 837 all in one is 800. What happened? I would like to stay with six inks but I can't get a search to tell me which Epsons use DuraBright. I may be able to get mine unclogged for 80 bucks tomorrow. The other one I had clogged and I tried the homebrew unclogging scheme but it did nothing. If you run the headcleaning routine on an Epson three times and it doesn't start printing right, you are dead.

The Epson Artisan 1430, 13 inches wide, has a 6 color ink set - that Epson calls Claria - Black, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Light Cyan and Light Magenta. The 1430's have been around for about 5 years, but they are still actively being sold (in fact, the price just went up from 299.00 to 349.00). The printers that currently use DuraBrite inks are Epson's business inkjets (Workforce) that use 4 color ink sets.

The DuraBrite inks are pigment, designed primarily for business or document use. The 725 used Claria dye inks, the same as Tony is recommending in the 1430.

Your Epson 725 is a three-in-one machine. To replace it, you want either the Epson XP-860, which only prints up to letter (8.5x11 inch) or A4 size, but has a document feeder for the scanner; or an Epson XP-960, whose scanner only scans single sheets, but which prints up to 11x17 inches or A3 size. Both cost about $200 new from reputable vendors like B&H. Both use 6-ink sets of Claria HD ink (CcMmYK). The Epson ink cartridges for these models are available in regular (T277x20) and extra-large (T277XLx20) versions.
FWIW, Canon makes a product generally similar to the Epson XP-860, the Canon TS9020. It has five inks, not six, dropping the light cyan and light magenta but adding a gray cartridge. Some people think the prints look better; certainly I'd think black-and-white photo prints would look better.

I took the 725 to a local inkjet service vendor and the tech there is going to soak and inspect all the nozzles and tubes. I'm going to risk the 70 bucks to see if I can get another year or two out of it. If not I'll get the 960 or next model down.
