Title: Unequal margins: Lr and Pixma Pro-100?
Post by: Bob_B on February 20, 2017, 10:57:19 am
I have noticed that the left and right margins on my 13x19 prints are not equal size: the right margin is 23mm, while the left is 20mm. They are both set to 0.75 inches in Lightroom's print module, and have not been adjusted in the Canon printer setup. The Pro-100 squeezes the paper to center, so there's nothing that can be adjusted on the printer itself, as far as I know.

This leaves me with what to do to get both margins equal? Should I 'force' the correction in LR by changing over to metric units and adding 1.5 mm to one side while subtracting 1.5 mm from the other margin?

I know, it's just 3 mm but it makes a difference when surface mounting prints for display, IMHO.

If you have any thoughts on how to correct this please let me know.

Thanks,

3mm is the usual Canon printer "minimum printable margin", and this seems to be entering somehow into the process. Long ago when trying to manually set margins on my i9900 I ran into this minefield in PS, requiring asymmetrical offsets to get true centering.

The solution was to simply size the image relative to paper size to allow the borders I wanted. In your case for .75" borders, the major axis would be 17.5" on 13x19 paper, and the minor would follow proportionally. Add no blank canvas, be sure no scaling is checked and image is 100%. Then press "center" and print. Foolproof and exact on several printers since - currently an iPF5100.

I never had this problem with my pro-100, but I did with the pro-1000. My temporary work-around was to use the top feed rather than the manual feed: do you see the same with both?
Then I upgraded the firmware and it went away...

Thanks GrahamBy. I was using v1.020 firmware, and decided to update to 1.100 (the latest). I'll see if that helps.

That's a useful work-around, if one wants equal margins on all four sides. Unfortunately, my top and bottom margins are not equal: top is 0.75 and bottom is 1.5" (allows a bit of extra space for signature). Nonetheless, I'll keep your method in mind Pete, and thanks!

Not to worry, Bob! Once sized and centered, uncheck "center" and you're able to change the proximity value of either side to its edge (but not closer than the 1/8" minimal printed margin). So simply change the top margin to 0.75 and it will be a true image-to-edge value.
