Hi,
Does anyone know if the Canon extender lenses will work with the 70-300 DO lens (and retain autofocus)?

short answer: no.
but the problem is the protruding forward element - needs a recessed rear element in the lens. Other makers don't have the same protrusion so (eg Kenko) should work.
AF is determined by what you camera can do. 1D etc etc. will af to f8 - so f4 with 2x will AF on my 1d2 (or 2.8 with 1.4 and 2x stacked!). There's a trick somewhere about taping the 3 "left" pins to fool the camera, but performance is going to be very iffy.
I've never been happy with the quality of an extender on my zooms - 70-200 or 100-400 - but your mileage may vary.

Not sure if its any help but I occasionally use my 1.4x on other lenses by placing a extension tube between the two. You can't focus on infinity but it can be useful for closeups.
