Title: Destination Gamut Warnings Confusion
Post by: CynthiaM on August 22, 2016, 02:58:07 pm
I'm having trouble understanding the Lightroom soft-proof destination gamut warnings. For example, if I plan to print on a paper like Epson Ultra Premium Presentation Matte (UPPM) and have that file selected under Profile in the soft proof, typically I will see more out of gamut indicators if the destination gamut warning is turned on than I would see with just about any paper profile that would use photo black ink (Epson ultra premium lustre or Exhibition fiber) or even a higher end matte paper like Hot Press natural. Presumably this is because these paper are capable of printing a wider gamut of colors than the (UPPM).

If I am correct so far then please explain the following. I just upgraded my printer from the Epson 3880 to the SC-P800. My understanding is that the SC-P800 is capable of printing a wider gamut of color than the 3800. So why are all profiles consistently showing a larger out of gamut indicators when comparing the p800 to the 3800? The out of indicators consistently cover a larger area of the same image when comparing warnings for the p800 to the 3800; seeing more red out of gamut indication for profiles on the p800 than I am seeing for the 3800.

Is this what I should be seeing?

Just ignore it! The OOG overlay is pretty worthless and buggy, here's why:

The Out Of Gamut Overlay in Photoshop and Lightroom
In this 25 minute video, I'll cover everything you need to know about the Out Of Gamut (OOG) overlay in Photoshop and Lightroom. You'll see why, with a rare exception, you can ignore this very old feature and still deal with out of gamut colors using modern color management tools.

You'll find some insight on this question in my review article of the Epson P800 on this website, where I use data and graphics computed in ColorThink Pro, not the LR gamut warnings.

Thank you both for your replies. As always, they are both helpful and most appreciated.

I use LR to softproof. And when switch in between perceptual  and colorimetric the image appearance changes a bit there is some part out of gamut. In the darker areas the oog warning simply fails
.
This is especially visible with profiles of matte papers.
So I do not use oog , just switch between rendering intens to get a clue. Is far more telling. Then decide on what to do to get the aimed for appearance.
