Title: 100MP CCD sensor from DALSA

DALSA have announced a sensor with more than 100 MP, 4 inches square, initially to be used by the US Naval Observatory.

Michael, no doubt you'll be the first person to review it on a large format camera :-)
4x4 sounds very close to 4x5...

Regards,

Alan

I bet it's $500,000 -> $1,000,000 US dollars just for that sensor... probably not something for a camera anytime soon!

It probably needs to be chilled too if it's designed for astronomy.

It is not a requirement for astrophotography that a sensor should run so hot that it requires particular cooling measures.

On the contrary, in astrophotography, it is important that sensors don't run hot, because that means noise, and with the exposure times that astronomers do, you really want to avoid that.

My understanding is they actually refrigerate the sensors with Peltier junctions and other techniques.

They run wickedly long exposure times.. there is no way to make the chip run cool enough normally.

So they chill the chip below freezing, which allows them to get rid of lots of noise in the images.

It's not because the chip can't perform, it's because it performs much better when it's refrigerated.

Any idea which optics would justify the quality of 111MP Digital sensor?

Schneider/Rodenstock/Zeiss?

Well, it would be a welcome upgrade, I suppose, but I expect that they are focusing their efforts on the JWST instead.

I wonder how many wafers they had to run to get one good die?

What's with naming their telescope after the star of Dragnet, anyway?

Michael, can we assume that you have already sold your P45 on eBay and placed your order for the new 0.1 Gigapixel chip, with a review pending?

I hear that CitiBank is offering 30-year fixed-rate financing on these chips. Whew, I need another mortgage!
