Hi Russ,

Your image is a good illustration of how a brighter coloured subject grabs more attention and is perceived to be closer than it actually is, lack of focus notwithstanding.

Good point, Bart. It seems especially strong in the thumbnail, but also in the enlarged image.

That's why the image works, for me. At first glance (at the thumbnail) the bright area looks like the main subject, but on getting the larger version, it is immediately apparent that the real interest is elsewhere. A very effective tease.
