Title: OS X RAW Converter and Converter in other apps
Post by: spassig on April 27, 2016, 01:07:25 pm
Hello

I "know" that OS X has RAW Converter.
I "know" that Apps in OS X use this
I "know" that other Non Apple Apps use the implemented OS X Converter.
I read that some Non Apple Apps use her own RAW Converter.
a) Is that right?
b) Or is this a rumor?

If a) Yes can I see which Non Apple Apps have her own RAW Converter?
Or is this decribed only in technical data?

Jochen

yes, Apple has the functionality in OSX

yes

yes, for example Phocus from H. for non H raw files

I read that some Non Apple Apps use her own RAW Converter.

yes, for example Adobe ACR/LR and most of other raw converters

If a) Yes can I see which Non Apple Apps have her own RAW Converter?

typically either manufacturer will state that they are using OSX functionality (Phocus) for some/all raw files... most (specifically if they are not OSX only) do their own work (again Phocus is a notable exception for non H raw files)

Or is this decribed only in technical data?

typically in readme/release notes

In addition to above - On a Mac if the View is set to icons ( and best to large icons) then you can browse your raw files in the finder. You can also select a number of them and Control Click to open with the Preview app. This is really useful.
Hasselblad uses Phocus software as stated and that just uses the OS for raw conversion (at least for Mac) so that pretty well means OS Raw Conversion is good enough for anyone. I also use Aperture which exclusively is for Mac as it uses OS raw conversion.

Indeed it's even easier (and faster) than that. With a file selected in the Finder, just hit the space bar. This will bring a "quick look" of the photo. Press the space bar again to close the quick look window. Or you can use the arrow keys to navigate through the photos while the quick look window is open and rapidly view them all. You can share files, email them, and do lots of things from within the quick look window without ever having to "open" them.

Note this works for nearly every file supported on OS X: PDFs, Word, Excel, images, sound files (yes, it will play!), etc.
