Today I'm very excited as I was able to recover over 6000 deleted photographs from Nepal & Iceland.
This photo is something special for me. I'll let it speak for itself. I'm just so happy to have it... it actually brings tears to my eyes.

Nice samples of what you have recovered. Any cautionary words on how you happened to accidentally delete 6000 shots? I have nightmares about doing that kind of thing.

I dropped a 3TB western digital 10 inches from on top of a suitcase to the ground while transferring data. I plugged it in a few times (HUGE MISTAKE) to see if it would read on a different computer since it sort of seemed to recognize the drive but was making whizzing noises. $2,700 was the quote I received to fix the drive, I reluctantly said ok since this was priceless data. No data, no charge. I was among the 5% chance that it would be unrecoverable. Apparently critical header data was damaged and no one can retrieve the data. 2.5 months in New Zealand lost, everything from Indonesia, Singapore, Cambodia, etc, lost. About half of Iceland is probably also lost. New Zealand loss is huge, some of the best photographs of my life out there, and I didn't like the place a ton... I had about (3) weeks when I was back where I had deleted the data off a back up laptop and didn't have storage space for the entire thing on my box, so I was delaying the backup process until I could completely transfer everything. Huge mistake... will never make a mistake like this again, that's for sure. Always have (2) copies, DO IT NOW, as in RIGHT NOW!

Son number two deleted my PhD work, all of it, just months before I was to submit. All gone, never to be recovered. I feel your pain.
Great photos though.

Holy bananas Bill. You may have been upset.
Fortunately I did mine in the days of paper and it was basically 6 publications stapled together and being maths quite short.
A friend claimed his thesis was stolen from his car. Hmm, one up on the dog ate it miss. He was not happy in his work. I think he became a butcher.

I think I am covered, but I am going to check (when I have finished my coffee). $2700 seems a bit heroic for recovering data from a portable drive, based on my experience of damaged drives - but anyway, it didn't work. I assume you got other quotes.
May the memory of the fine images you lost inspire you to create even finer ones in future :)

As someone with a background in IT I find these stories horrifying!
I just checked my automated backup and it all looks good. Whew. ;D

I don't know. I shot all of Nepal in sRGB which basically makes me want to cry. I shipped a new camera out because I blew my back in Iceland... and forgot the native setting of the d810 is sRGB... WTF NIKON!? WHY?!! That's why I'm probably going to flip most of my Nepal shots to black and white... The color is just impossible to work with, it never seems to come out satisfying.

Only on accident. No these were raw sRGB files... meh. Why that's even a possible setting on my camera is beyond me. I challenge you Nikon! Come up with just one scenario where a photographer shooting in RAW would only want sRGB raw files?!

Are you absolutely sure that the RAW file is in sRGB.
I always thought that it was only the embedded jpg that has the sRGB color space!

As a b&w photographer, Robert, no wonder you don't get it. Your RAWs come with a b&w space attached, with extra serving of black ;)

I used to confuse my color memory cards with my B&W ones, so now I label them. ::)
