Title: Reaching
Post by: maddogmurph on March 23, 2016, 05:13:41 pm
An older process from 8 months or so back.

Great lines, layers and light. Sure worth the hike.

Spectacular. Processing is spot and I think that it is an image that will be hard to nitpick?

Is that a challenge?  ;)
I love the foreground. The top is excellent but feels to me like it is another topic that could be in its own image.

What would you think of a square format starting from the left side ?

The kind of shot I'm often pursuing (with mixed results). Love it!

Yeah, overall I'm satisfied with the image, but I do feel like the sky could perhaps use something, I may revisit it some day.

Great photograph. The only nitpick would be the title; I see a spectacular landscape, but I don't get the "Reaching" metaphor.

It's the light reaching out for one last kiss of the earth ;) as Hafiz might say...

I like it a lot. The light is sweet, depth is excellent with all these ridges and also, there's enough details in the shadows.
Good job!

To me it's one of those "almost" shots that we've all taken, particularly compared to some of your recent spot-on images. As others have said, the top part doesn't do justice to the exquisite bottom 80%. But you knew that; and you take what the scene gives you.

This is a spectacular photo, but two things bother me - the lower three fourths of the image appear a bit too dark and muddy and the color palette doesn’t work for me. I understand your intent in keeping the lower portion dark, and it occurs to me that if the color palette were altered then perhaps the darkness wouldn't bother me. The blue, orange, and mauve just don't work well together, but then that’s for my eye, not yours; and altering the palette may not be compatible with your editing ethics.
Otherwise this is a real gem and a great reward for hiking up Old Snowy. :)

My editing ethics are to make the image look spectacular and believable ... it's unbelievable some of the things I do to accomplish this. Especially since they are often inverse relationships.
+Cool grad filter on sky - is that what you're talking about?

Yes. I like what you did with the cool grad filter, much better than what I did with the sky below. Mainly all I did was change the color temp to take the mauve tone out of the foreground and lightened it up a bit. That made the background palette even worse to my eye, but I didn't try to fix it since you have a good solution already. I do think that opening up the foreground helps add some drama, but that's just me. Either way it's truly a spectacular photo!

Great comp and light. Color pallet of course subjective - I do like the warmer version personally. Mt Ranier in the distance?
