Title: CO9 Supported file Formats?
Post by: Bob Rockefeller on February 19, 2016, 01:13:24 pm
I've checked the CO9 help site and tried DuckDuckGo, but can't find a reference for the file formats that CO9 supports for input.

Can someone share a link?

I'm specifically interested in the flavors of TIFF that are, and are not, supported.

Hi Bob,

This is a recent list (https://www.phaseone.com/en/Search/Article.aspx?articleid=1010) for the Raw file formats.

TIFF is a file format specification that supports a virtually countless variety of file content (e.g. multiple pages, image pyramids, height map data, etc., in various numerical precisions). The specification  mostly formalizes the available Tags that can be used to describe the data, but the data can be almost anything. It is hard to predict if a specific content type is supported unless it was written by Capture One to begin with. The less esoteric the file content is, the larger the chance it will not cause unforeseen problems. Usually there are few problems if the file contains single layer, high compatibility mode, RGB raster data without alpha channels.

But not all programs that can write TIFFs also populate all required Tags, because they often assume only reading back to the same application, or a specific application like Photoshop. They can't test all possible programs, so they offer no guarantees that all other programs can read them in full. There are some file format converter applications that allow some control over the formatting, but I'm not up to date on those, and how well they prepare for Capture One in particular.

I've e.g. read about previous compatibility issues from TIFFs written by Affinity Photo that had to do with Affinity Photo not sticking to the formal requirements, and subsequent fixes by them to better comply with general practices. No idea if they solved all possible issues, there are just too many potential issues to be 100% sure.

Cheers,
Bart

Thanks, Bart.

I was hoping for something more specific to TIFF formats and how CO handles some of the more common formats.
