We'd been out in the Panamint Valley on a road that surely was designed by a chiropractor and were trying to get to Mesquite Flats for the sunset. I was speeding as we were losing the light fast, but when I came around the bend and beheld this glorious scene, I had to pull over and snap a few quick ones. By the way, we did make it just in time for the sunset on the dunes.

Nice layering. Good thing you didn't open the shadows too much (or at all).

Honestly, as beautiful as this image is, I think the clouds are what make it! Not sure what it is about them but they really do it for me!!

That's a glorious scene and you were certainly wise to stand on the brakes to get this photo. But, I must say that is seems over-processed to me. Those colors do not look real. Of course I wasn't there, but I have been out west quite a lot and I have never seen anything with colors like that. Any chance you could post a less processed version?

Ahhhhhh. Towne Pass. Gateway to Heaven for landscape photographers. Having crossed that pass a dozen times or more, I can assure you that those colours are real.
Beautiful, David. Well worth stopping for, even if there's nowhere to pull off. :)

Given the time of day and lack of haze the colour palette seems plausible to me.

Towne Pass: Thanks Peter M, I was wondering if there was a name for it.
Interesting about the concerns regarding color. The raw image looks nothing like what I saw, but the final does reflect my vision. Is that a conundrum?

PS Slobodan. I learned something very interesting. In reworking this, I thought I changed nothing in LR before moving to PS. But then I noticed the "cyanish" sky was no longer present. I was sure I'd done nothing different in LR, but remembering our conversation about profiles, I went back to look and sure enough, I had indeed changed the Camera Profile to Landscape and forgotten about it. Now will you quit ragging on me for "special" Nikon colors? ;) ;D
