Title: Canon ipf 8300 print head swap
Post by: Miles on February 02, 2016, 08:37:24 am
I have a Canon ipf 8300 which has run flawlessly until now.  With the newly announced rebates on the ipf 8400 I am thinking of making the switch.  My understanding is that the 8400 uses the same inks and print heads (PF-05).  I just installed a new print head in my 8300.  Can I simply remove the print head and put it in the same position in a new 8400 and keep the sealed one that comes with the machine as a spare?  Is there any special encoding that happens to the print head that will prevent me from using it on a new machine?

Can I also remove my ink carts and place them in an 8400 without issues?

I would also be interested in hearing peoples thoughts on whether there are any other parts worth keeping?

As long as the inks are the same for both models, but I would recommend contacting Canon's hotline to verify.  800-423-2366

The print heads can not be switched over as the chip locks it into the model until it's needing to be replaced.

and the chip itself can't be moved over to the other head?

I wouldn't chance it as it may cause issues in the printer.  The printer that includes the heads is a free 1-year warranty and once you replace them (or one) within that first year, Canon will send a replacement at no cost.  After you receive another print head (or purchase one if past the warranty), the new head will start its own 1 year warranty cycle.

I do a ton of work on my 8300 , it's a workhorse with no hassles, and I've found that I end up replacing an average of one head per year or two, and I'm happy to do it.

having just gone through this I'll tell you my experience as advised by canon directly
the printheads can be swapped to the SAME SIDE in the SAME Model printer. so one ipf8300 right head can become another ipf8300 right head. the chip is not set to your specific printer but it is to the side and model. when I upgraded I sold my working but used heads - just cap them up and seal them carefully.

the ink transfers flawlessly and easily. jsut pop em out of the old and into the new. if you've got any cart that are under 50% use the new ones that come with the printer to charge the printer, then put the old ones in. trying to charge the printer with a cart that runs out of ink just ends up wasting more ink when you have to restart the process.
