I'm definitely not a video guy, but since my D810 and upcoming D500 both shoot video pretty well, I thought I would give it go. I know using the built in microphone is a no go, especially when using any kind of AF because of the motor noise.
Looking for a general purpose microphone that will usually be connected to the camera hot shoe. This will mainly be for sports or events where getting a microphone close is not an option.
Should I just go with the Nikon ME-1 or is there either a similarly priced, but higher quality option or a similar performance, but lower priced option?
Thanks!

Check out (http://en.rode.com/microphones/video) the offerings from Rode. They do very well for me. Better yet is to get the mic off the camera.

+1 on Rode mics. Have had really great results with both the Video Pro and Video Go models ... great options for quality and compactness for easy traveling and run-and-gun shooting.
