Title: Website help
Post by: situgrrl on April 25, 2006, 08:20:25 am
I've written this real basic site to get me started (well, tell a story I needed off my chest) in iWeb.  My friend has given me some server space and registered a domain and things so all I needed to do was ftp the site.

First I published to a folder per the instructions and then I ftp'd this along with the index.html file to my ftp server but something is broken!

my URL is www.charleehunter.tk
or www.thediff.net/charlee

and I get this error.

Warning: main(/home/diffnet/thediff.net/editor/editor.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/.dean/diffnet/thediff.net/index.php on line 199

Fatal error: main(): Failed opening required '/home/diffnet/thediff.net/editor/editor.php' (include_path='.:/usr/local/lib/php') in /home/.dean/diffnet/thediff.net/index.php on line 199

I don't understand what's wrong!  Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Charlee

Hi Charlee,

I'm not too familiar with iWeb. You should probably post some details on which features you're trying to use.

At a guess, you're using a template, and the canned blog abilities. It appears to require some specific PHP server side abilitiy.

You're hosting at a free webspace, and they may not have PHP installed (or not the required version or settings).

Since you own the domain, I'd recommend getting some cheap hosting, and select the hosting provider based on some forum reading or stated support for iWeb.

Graham.

What does the index.html look like?

iWeb publishes the designed site in a folder named Site. If you want to put it on a server (online) you must put the content of that folder in your online directory. If you drag the Site folder then you need to indicate that in the path (ex: http://my.greatwebsite.com/charlee/ (http://my.weblog.com/charlee/)Site/index.html).

If this is what you've already done, then I don't know, sorry

iWeb doesn't use PHP so the error messages come from somthing else.

Have you pointed the domain name to the website?

Dark Penguin - some apple msg about personal web sharing.  This doesn't seem right...I thought that personal web sharing was having my website hosted on my IP on my computer - I would be my own server.  I don't want that grief!  A friend has kindly given me some space on thediff.net.  All I know about this is that there is terabytes of storage available and it will do my website thing.

francois - my ftp client sorts that - my initial thought.

I know that every website needs an index page.  Do some servers need that to be index.php and others need it to be index.html?

Thanks

I think the message is telling you that the files you uploaded are not where they are expected to be. Perhaps the instructions you received had an error.

To my knowledge all web servers use either the .htm or .html extension for pages and all that I'm aware of will let you open any "legal" page by simply giving it's designator such as h*tp://www.someone.net or com or so on. The "trick" is having your files where the server software expects to find them from your alias (the alias is anything other than the real numerical URL).

Any time you register an alias it takes anywhere up to 72 hours for the information to filter through the system and be available. You may want to check with the company or registry where you alias was purchased and get the real numerical URL and try that. Next I would double check and be absolutely certain that at least your index.htm(l) file is in the proper place.

Best regards,

Lin
