Title: Leaf Aptus Air Vents Safe?
Post by: Concorde-SST on April 22, 2006, 04:48:51 pm
Hi,

I just returned from a trip with MR and saw
several Leaf Aptus (22 + 75) at work.

I was wondering if somebody out there has
some experience with the relatively open
cooling vents on the sides?

We were in Namibia, a VERY dusty place
with lots of sand - so I was worried about
their performance / ability to clean up.

I used a lent P25 from Phase One and their
cooling seems to be superior.

What do you think?

thanks,

Andreas.

I shoot in Arizona and I am not really worried . The Aptus was tested in Israel and Israel has a lot of dust as well so i don't think it is a big issue .

Were you able to get a picture of Brad and Angelina with those cameras?

All workshop members were issued with Bradgalina filters upon arrival in Namibia.

I recently spent a week in Death Valley in high winds and sand storms. My Aptus has absolutely no problems with the sand or heat. Here in Florida it has been fine with high humidity as well.

I waffled between the Phase and Aptus for Architectural Photography and went with the Aptus for what I found to be a more film like image (less sterile) and better moire characteristics when shooting buildings and interiors with repeating complex patterns.

But, as I mentioned, I have seen absolutely no issues due to the "cooling vents".

Andreas,

Did you try asking those other WS members using Aptus backs? They'd be the first to know if they had issues, shouldn't they? :-)

Bernard

I'm not convinced you can read too much into the cooling solution of different manufacteruers. As Jenoptic also uses pretty "heavy dutty" cooling on its Dalsa chipped products, I wonder whether the Dalsa sensor genuinely needs more cooling than the Kodak one. Isn't it something to do with the "always on" nature of the sensor - or maybe I am just thinking about the rest of the system - amplifiers etc, which are "always on" in all backs apart from Phase One backs. Phase happens to use Kodak sensors. AS for whether these are inherently lower power/less heat producing I do not know, but its posiible that Phase 1's elegant
"sleep Architecture" could not be used in conjunction with a Dalsa chip. Who knows maybe tomorrow the'll announce a 33.3MP Dalsa chipped back as an alternative to the P45 and to steal some business away from the "dominant Aptus 75" ? Oe maybe Leaf will try more passive cooling methods (but many of these are probably covered by patents)

And Andreas, could you tell us what they told you when you asked them.

Yeah, sorry -

the first one used an Aptus 22 and he said he
still doesn´t knows that.

The second one was using an Aptus 75 and
he said - no problems.

As you can see - I was looking for an answer
from someone with extensive experience
(such as MR) in shooting outside since studio
work isn´t my liking.

best,

A.
