Title: Print on demand book quality & questions about color space/screen set up
Post by: ymc226 on December 14, 2015, 08:06:51 pm
I am a hobbyist and process using Leica M9P/M240/MM/ASPH lenses/LR6/NEC PA screens/Spectraview calibrated for matte/glossy/Imageprint 10/Epson 3880/Canson Rag Photographique/Epson Hot Press Bright.  Attaining screen to print equivalent is mostly achieved in my experience.

Of course,  I don't expect similar quality in the consumer POD services but which services have members used and would use again based on quality of product including the print, paper, covers and customer responsiveness?  I Googled in search of various POD providers and Moleskine+MILK seemed to have a nicely presented product.

I've used Pinhole press for a completely B&W book but was not impressed with the grey scale.  I didn't change my color space from ProPhoto to sRGB.  Would this make a difference given B&W?

Just now, I remembered my daughter made books using both Moleskin and MILK using iPhone photos.  Reviewing them, the colors are muted and off.  I assume the default color space was sRBG and given MILK's higher price, I would not try them out.  This blog review with many users comments also points to a less than stellar performance.  Telling to me is that there is no phone number on their website to speak with a real human and nowhere on their website can I easily find the requirements of files they need to optimize outcome.  Moleskine+MILK blog review (http://photographyconcentrate.com/review-of-moleskinemilks-photo-book-plus/)

I want a nice quality print on good paper with accurate color and grey scale representation.  It would be for family use;  nothing professional.  Which providers have good track records?  Are there companies out there that accept TIFFs or a larger color space?

Technically in my work flow, how would I achieve a sRBG output?  Would I setup LR6 to work in and output in sRBG though my NEC PA screen would be calibrated in adobe RBG?

Muted where? On the output? Depends on what she sent to whomever and if they are color managed or not.

On a Mac? Try Aperture, iPhoto or Photo's using their service.
