Title: Moose Meadows, Banff National Park
Post by: sdwilsonsct on November 23, 2015, 11:34:32 am
Moose: Either? Neither?

And the setting. Wish I had had the wits to avoid the tree-lean.

All very nice. I love that backlight with the moose. It makes those shots stand apart from "a photo of a moose". Good job.
The landscape is also a nice shot. What exactly do you mean about the tree lean?

If the "tree lean" is the trees to the right in #3, I suspect you could fix it in Photoshop.
Or, you could go back there, put a sturdy rope around each tree attached to the bumper of a Land Rover and pull them a bit more upright. Then you would have to clone out the ropes and the Land Rover.

Or simply point out to viewers that the trees are tilted by the prevailing winds.

Of the two moose images, I choose number 2.  The ears tell the story.  A moose that is feeding or not worried about anything will have their ears laying down.  An alert moose will have their ears up and moving individually to identify the source of a sound or threat.  The exception to that rule is when a moose is ready to charge.  Then they will lay their ears down flat.  It's up to you to figure out if they're happy and feeding or just about to run you down.

I choose Moose #2! It's always nice to see the eyes of the animal.

In #3, the verticals are converging (leaning to the centre), which I suppose is the result of shooting a UWA lens? Easy to fix with perspective correction, but you will lose some image real estate.

Good light in all of them.

Thanks for the feedback!

Yes, the tree lean was caused by short focal length. I shot wide so that distortion could be corrected in post, thinking I would retain just the peak on the right. Sober second thought, however, leaves me also wanting to include the right-hand trees. And straightening chops off half of them. Leaving them out makes for a weaker overall composition.

I could have used a shift lens, but time was short. Sadly, Eric, I had no rope handy.

OK, moose 2 it is. I rarely get to shoot an animal in interesting light, so this was a treat.

Interesting ear info, David, I'll remember. As I was leaving two younger guys with long lenses were wading into the willows for a close-up. Perhaps they saw some ears back.

Scott, I always enjoy a moose shot and the light is an added bonus.

Forgive me but I couldn't help adding a couple more moose (at least they aren't cats).  These are quick snaps taken out our dining room window several winters ago.  The ears are at attention but not always sure which way to turn. :)

Bruno, Mark: thanks! I thought the sky was a little muddy and have lightened it a tad.
