Title: Hello and a few from Brittany, France
Post by: HCS on September 07, 2015, 01:32:58 pm
Hello, my first post after a (very) long while of lurking.

Shot from one beach in Brittany, France (Saint Lunaire, Longchamps beach) while on holiday. In my minds eye they had to be B&W. While i know i can't compete with many of you (perhaps all of you), i am still very interested in feedback you may have for me.

#1 wormhole
#2 little light house
#3 town on the edge

Thanks, Hans

Not bad at all. I like the first best.

Welcome.

My first choice is #1, and my second is #2.
In the first I like what is going on with the reflections in the water, and I would be tempted to crop out some of the sky, as I find the brightest areas there to be a bit distracting.

Let me add my welcome, too, and suggest that you post some more.

Eric

Welcome, and post some more.

To me, #1 is very good, and I like the bright part of the sky, as it complements the bright part of the sand.

#2 I really like the movement in the water.

#3 is not bad, but not as strong.

The first is also my favourite. I like the effect on the water with the movement in 2. It would be interesting to see a severe crop containing only the water and seaweed.

Regards and thanks for sharing.

Welcome on the forum!

I'm no different than the previous comments… First photo is my favorite.

Welcome to the forum. I like the 1st photo best but agree with Eric's suggestion about cropping out some of the sky.

Don't worry about competing - it's not sport.

Thank you all very much for looking and commenting. I will certainly try some of your suggestions. I am glad that you at least like some of the posted photos.

I understand Graeme, maybe the phrase "can't hold a candle to all of you" would have been better.

Thanks again.

Welcome! #1 my favorite - and it reminds me of a natural equivalent to the iconic photo view of  New York City waterfront with rotting pier piles. Here it is the rocks sticking up periodically.

Thank you for posting. The first definitely feels the most complete with respect to composition, subject matter, and completeness.

Excellent technique and timing. A very good series.

I can't help but notice that each could be brighter, by about 1/2 to 2/3s of a stop. If you are in LR, raise the Exposure, then re-adjust for the highlights if they start to blow.

Compositionally, I like the high horizon. These all work as they are. In the future you could try to introduce more "drama" in the foreground with even sharper diagonals in the leading lines. Diagonals are there to some extent, but accentuating them with a sharper angle would help create stronger movement between foreground and background.

Lastly, try bringing out just a little more detail in the shadowed background with slightly less contrast (specifically #1) to draw viewers back. Stronger diagonals in the foreground will bring viewers forward again.

Except for the brighter exposure suggestion, these really are "nit-picks"! Well done.

Thanks Terry for this detailed feedback, very much appreciated. I'll work on the brightness part. The leading lines, very good point. I've tried to make the most of it, esp. in the 1st shot, but can always do better. I'll pay (even more) attention next time.

Very nice, all of them. I especially like the motion and simplicity of #2.

Interesting first image and great clouds, wishing for a lower POV to capture
the FG subject matter. Welcome back !

Thanks Scott and Dwayne, really appreciated.

Yeah, lower POV on the first one. I was already really low, the small worm holes (no pun intended) are really small. I'll keep it in mind though for a next time, good suggestion.
