My calibrated iMac has failed.

I'm now using my MacBook Air for my posts, a 10º tilt on the screen produces variable results, what can I do to provide to provide a consistent image?

Connect an external display. What else?

MBA has TN type panel - TN stands for "Twisted Nemetic", but what it really should mean is "Traumatic Neurosis". It has horrible viewing angles, narrow color space, bad linearity and tonality, and cheapo W-LED backlight (blue LED with yellow phosphor) makes it even worse.

For my MacBookPro, I used some of Norman Koren's gamma test images from here:

scroll down to the "Gamma and Black Level chart" section.  See attached screenshot for the gamma image I used.

In Photoshop, I made a neutral gray 8bit image the EXACT size (pixel dimensions) of my desktop.  I pasted the UNSCALED gamma image from the above link into the document along the left edge of the document.  You cannot scale the gamma image or it will cause artifact in the line pattern used to assess display gamma.

I saved the image in PS and made it my desktop image.  I can then tilt my display until the gamma reads 2.2 from my particular viewing angle.  It does not cure the issues with viewing angle for these displays, but at least you can be somewhat consistent when viewing your display.

A quick and dirty way of getting a reasonably acceptable image is to make sure that the screen is parallel to your viewing angle – that is, not tilted away or towards you (up and down / left and right) – and that the screen is central in your field of view.  Practically this may not always be possible, of course !

I think Acratech makes some sort of alignment widget for laptop screens to help keep them consistently keep an angle relative to the viewer.

Thanks for your help, I've nearly got my new computer set up.

I've been spoilt by IT guys just rolling up a new computer for me to use!
