Title: hockey arena panoramics
Post by: icepicks67 on March 09, 2006, 12:22:39 pm
I would like some advice from photographers experienced in shooting wide/panoramic images.
I need to photograph various venues, interior and exterior.
The facilities range from 4000 to 10,000 seat arenas.
They must be shot on colour neg film, so merging images is not an option unfortunately. The Noblex looks interesting, but I can't find any place to rent this.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

What about using Sigma 14mm rectilinear on 35mm of your choice?

The Noblex is an excellent camera. Seitz Roundshot is another sophisticated option - 360 degrees. I assume you are talking about medium-fomat cameras.

With an rotating lens/camera type, maxmimum shutter speed is an issue for interiors. Both those manufacturers have models that can take relatively long exposures. I believe the Noblex uses an attachment. I also believe that both have a shift for perpective control. But this type of cameras do not distort the view and so when a flat print is made, it looks strange. Not a contradiction, but a problem of presenting a circular field on a flat plane. There is a cheap Chinese version of the Noblex called the Wide Pan and a 35mm Russian camera called the Horizon.

Flat film cameras like the Fuji and Linholf 6x17s keep lines straight and so look natural, but they are limited to a maximum angle of view of about 90 - 110 degrees and center filters are required to keep illumination at the film plane even - long exposures are easy though. Fotoman sells cheap 6x12 and 6x17 cameras.

As for renting, only major cities will most likely offer these cameras for rent. I ended up buying my own swing lens and flat film cameras.

If you are scanning your negs, why not? Just use something like PTGui and it will give you superb results in 16bit.
