Title: how to sell mf equipment
Post by: rainer_v on August 16, 2015, 01:45:32 pm
I have so many mf lenses laying around and wonder how to sell them the best way. Any idea? Ebay is not the best place for special equipment ( as a sinar m 28mm lens e.g. ) ....

Advertising in buy and sell and add patience with that. I've bought and sold everything MFD in this forum and getdpi. I think this forum is a little more active for EU sales than getdpi.

GetDPI and Lu/La would be the first places I'd try. Then probably Fred Miranda (not that many MF users, but it gets a lot of traffic). After that I'd be off to eBay.

One thing to bear in mind is that there is not as much interest through places like GetDPI / LuLa in MF now compared to even just a couple of years ago; it has really dropped off, so tends to be a buyers market (this is especially the case with MFDBs, where the used price has nose-dived).

Oh, and by the way - having just seen your listing - I would post prices (and pictures), otherwise you turn your sale into a silent auction - which most people hate.

Despite the cost to sell on eBay, I've had much better success than free forums like LL or GetDPI.  Specifically, I've sold off items like Hartblei T/S lens, lenses with Rollei electronic shutters, Linhof 679 accessories and Fuji 680 camera systems.  In each case, the items had zero serious interest on the mentioned forums but sold relatively quickly on eBay.  eBay has such a world wide reach, well beyond the English speaking world served by the forums.  My stuff ended up in Norway, Sweden, China, Russia and the US. I did sell a digital back through LL though.

I sold all my Contax 645 bodies and lenses, and two Sinarbacks, and Leaf back - on eBay.

on eBay.
eBay policies do protect the buyer more than you, so yes you can - but the disputes if happen are going to be resolved into your buyer's favor with way way lesser burden on him/her to prove anything...

I have bought and sold Hasselblad, Phase One and Cambo gear on eBay.
How many specialised buyers are going to see your ad on a forum?
Even things I am looking for I miss here because they aren't described as I expect them or aren't looking at the time.
On eBay you can set favourite searches and eventually they come up somewhere on the planet.

I should also say that I use these speciality forums mainly because it feels more friendly and personal, and because it has worked for me both selling and buying. I haven't needed to go for Ebay yet, although my last Leaf back sale made me so desperate I almost went there :). Due to the recent crop of high res 135 cameras I think we've seen a "bump" upwards concerning the lowest level of MF gear most people are interested in making it more difficult to sell entry level stuff.
