Title: valley below
Post by: MattNQ on July 31, 2015, 07:53:32 am
View from a lookout near Wallaman Falls Nth Qld.
Tried to capture the patchy light falling on the ridgelines
Like the low cloud, but not convinced about the higher cloud though. Should it go?
Maybe make it just sky?

I like the concept but find that the sky is too dark compared to the valley. The light on the vegetation is fantastic but the whole image is out of balance (dark sky).
But it's just my opinion  ;)

Beautiful vista! I like the concept also, but francois is right: something is out of balance. To my eyes, the light patches on the vegetation are too strong, but then again, I am viewing with an uncalibrated monitor. Did you add local contrast (clarity) to the vegetation? If so, maybe backing it down may help.

Thank you Francois & Bob.

I started with an IR image, so the sky turned out darker than it otherwise would have.
I've taken a different tack in the PP and had another crack it it.
Lost some contrast in the clouds, but perhaps better balanced now?

Very nice photograph, Matt. The interlocking spurs progressing into the background are wonderful, even under the somewhat flatish lighting.

Three things I notice:

My suggestions, anyway; take them or disregard them.

I like the newer version, but I would be very much tempted to crop out the upper cloud.

I aslo agree and vote for the removal of the top-right cloud, it only brings confusion to the scene.
The new version is much better than the original, you're almost there!

Thanks all for the feedback. I'm off to bed now, but might tweak it some more tomorrow night.

Took my time getting back to this one - had to sort through a few thousand netball pics for my daughter's team after a carnival.

Anyway, the cloud on the RH side was voted out by many, so it was cloned into oblivion, and I also tried Terry's suggestion of the lower portion cropped.

Left the lightness as is for now.

The sky and clouds are good now.  Bring back the bottom to make this a nice vertical composition, and you are done!

Yes it has really coming together. Just add a bit more to bottom to "finish off" the diagonal (sorry, that's my rather pendantic need for closure and completeness - OCD, I guess)!

Perhaps finishing exactly in the corner is cliché, like aligning exactly on thirds ;-)

As I said...OCD. It wasn't self-deprecating humour - I was speaking the truth!

An image with great potential and the advice you received is very good. Can't add any more. :)

ok, the bottom is back.
diagonal runs to to the corner   - may be OCD - but, looks fine to me I think ;D

Thank you all for the feedback

I'd see this as a good recce photo. I'd go back when the light is nicer, and there's greater tonal contrast in the interlocking hills, probably with the receding hills getting progressively lighter.

Very nice composition in first image and the aspect ratio. I would definitely crop out the upper most cloud layer...it definitely detracts. Was the color version good?

It's a beautiful view and I like the clouds and the composition just fine. But, I have never liked IR images of foliage and, to be honest, have never understood why it is used. Do you have a non-IR version?

I'd agree with Bill, but I'd go further and suggest that color's essential to this one. You simply don't have the center of interest you need in order to make monochrome work well. Color contrasts might make the picture. As it is, there's really no there there.

I did take a colour version on the other camera, but there was way too much haze to make a good image.   Hence why I was playing with the IR version.
