Title: Waipio Valley
Post by: MTGFender on July 30, 2015, 08:13:44 pm
Waipio Valley, Big Island.
The steepest road of this length in the US.

Sometimes I made stupid decisions (when came to photography)!
Thanks god we're fine.

Must have been exciting:) I drove through similar (dirt) roads in Musandam (Oman) back in 2004, so I can appreciate what it takes.

I like the photo, maybe for someone it will look underexposed, but to me this just accentuates the light. I would straighten the horizon though, to me it is too tilted.

No, it's not too dark, it's just right and it lets the viewer discover the details almost one by one.
I also agree regarding the tilted horizon but it's an easy fix.

Dear Francois & Paulo...Thanks very much for your kind words. Corrected the horizontal line.
This was the last shot taking very fast before leaving the valley. It was quite close to the actual scene.
I did not bracket as it's too late and we're very nervous about driving up from the valley. I probably will not do it again.

I love the light on those wet rocks. It seems a little dark to me but that's maybe a matter of taste? Composition is nice and my eyes like to wander through.

So I have to ask, were you in a 4x4? Rental? Do they allow you to take the rentals there? I have found Hawaiian rental shops not to be very enthusiastic about this kind of thing!

Thanks Matt! It's a 4x4 and I wouldn't recommend to use 2-wheel drive.
If there's something bad happening, the insurance probably didn't cover. I think there's a fine print about that.
That's why I think it's our last trip at Waipio Valley.

As a long time resident of the Big Island I suggest you take one of the shuttles in and out of the valley. Let them get you in and out safely. Or, it's possible to walk, too- if you're in good shape.
Regarding the foto, I must say it's not only beautiful, but it somehow really evokes the feeling of Waipio as the sun disappears. Waipio is a Valley of the Kings. In Hawaiian mythology, Waipio holds a place not unlike the Christian Garden Of Eden.
Well done !
Richard

Thanks very much Richard for your kind words!
I didn't know about the shuttle. Once I know, there will certainly be another times.
It is very special and absolutely one of the best places in Big Island.
