Two versions, minutes apart. First a rather normal sunrise, two shot composite @ 1/10 (sky) & 1/5 (water) ISO 40 F:/22 and the second a rather normal sunrise with a Lee Big Stopper at 3 minutes, ISO 40, F:/22

The first is, as you imply, ordinary. I do like the second, though.

I also like the second one better. And rendering the sun in a way where it resembles the moon is interesting. However, I see a number of issues that I frequently encounter with my own use of strong ND filters. There seems to be a characteristic blue-green cast that can be tricky to compensate appropriately. And while the movement of water and clouds is rendered pleasingly, the breeze in the grass has left very little in sharp focus, which seems to me to give the whole image a rather blurry appearance. Of course that might be what you intended.

I prefer #2 because the sky is more interesting.

Hi Chris.
The photo with the use of ND is simply great. It deserves a wall ;-)
The long exposure makes the reeds / grass stand out and the sky more a live.
Great job!

#2 is very nice, but how did you manage to keep the sun relatively sharp with a 3 minute exposure? I would have thought the result would be more of a sun-smear.
-
Well, it was as much a surprise to me as you but just at the very end of the exposure time of 3 minutes (Lee 10x Big Stopper, ISO 40, F/22), the sun popped out of the cloud cover briefly. Dumb luck prevails again. ;D

"...luck favors the prepared mind..." something like that

I remember that movie...
