Title: Leica Red Dot Forum warns crash risk: Monochrom Raw files in Apple's Photos-app
Post by: ripgriffith on May 20, 2015, 03:20:07 am
http://www.reddotforum.com/content/2015/05/leica-monochrom-typ-246-dng-files-currently-incompatible-with-apple-photos-app/

With the new Apple ‘Photos’ App, when loading Monochrom DNG files from the new Monochrom, the library will crash continuously on loading. This may cause the Apple Photos library to be destroyed. This means that pictures previously taken with any other camera will be lost. As such, Leica Camera does not recommend using the Apple ‘Photos’ App for DNG files from the new Monochrom (Typ 246) until further notice.

What would Leica's liability be if someone didn't read the notice in the box and wiped out their entire library in one fell swoop?

Interesting question. The short answer is none.
I suspect that the liability would theoretically lie with Apple.

Leica produces kit that 'works'. What it works with is the domain of the software companies other than the RAW converter supplied by Leica, which in this case is none - they list and supply a 'free' copy of Lightroom in lieu of their own proprietary software.

If a Monochrom file was to wipe out your entire Lr catalog - well, that would be a different matter.

The fault for this bug is with Apple, not with Leica. The M246, as the other cameras from Leica, uses DNG- an open specification. It is not proprietary. Any software written to process the DNG specification can open the files without problems. Adobe Photoshop CS2 released in 2005 has no problems processing files from the M246, or any other Leica camera. LR3.6 has no problems either.

The real problem that should have apple scurrying to fix this obvious error with their core routines: the software fails and gives an invalid instruction error. It is trying to execute data. That means you could craft a DNG file to induce the error and start executing code.

It seems that processing DNG files is not the only problem with Apple operating systems: sending a text message with certain multiple character sets can crash the OS and cause a reboot as well. They have a problem with trying to execute data with several of their programs. Apple needs to hire some competent programmers.
