You have to read down a ways but it is in there...

What I read is "Baltimore City Paper said its photo editor, J.M. Giordano, was tackled and beaten by police while covering the protests. The paper said Giordano was standing near protesters when someone threw a rock at police. Officers responded, and Giordano was unable to get out of the way."

It doesn't seems a deliberate "journalist detainement" to me.

You forgot to read this part:

And Reuters photographer Sait Serkan Gurbuz said Baltimore police detained him Saturday night.

And after that:
Officers called the detention of the two journalists inadvertent.
"One journalist (Gurbuz) was released with a criminal citation, which is being recalled," police said in a statement. "One journalist (Giordano) was released without any charges."

So, again: it doesn't look like deliberate "journalist detainement" to me.

it depends, may be there were about to witness something that police did not want them to see... so detain and claim an error later...

Maybe just detainment of several people who in all probability were not doing anything warranting their arrest, and were probably carrying bulky photo-journalist style cameras which should be a clear enough indication to the police that they were not stone throwers, but were recording the activities.

It may be, but I find it unlikely.
What we know is that two guys were detained for some time and later released.

How long there were detained? We don't know for sure but probably not days or weeks (otherwise they would have told us).

Were they the only detained people after the rock throw? We don't know for sure but, again, probably not because otherwise they would have told us.

Were their cameras taken away and/or their photos confiscated or destroyed?
Again, probably not.

That's why I can't see an intentional journalist detainment: there are none of the sign the detainment was "journalistic motivated"

Maybe, but in this case there should be more accounts from "event recording people".
But for now we just know that two people were detained for a short period of time and then released without charges and without their recording confiscated.

bulky cameras are perfectly suitable place to hide deadly weapons, as one Ahmad Shah Massoud can attest from the other world

... Are you all so afraid of shadows now that you see a threat in everything?

Exactly... what's next, someone seeing a threat in boxcutters?

Whatever has happened to journalism and free speech as being the fifth pillar of democracy?
The journalism stopped being "the fifth pillar of democracy" long time ago, when newspaper became enterprises that make bucketload of money from advertising.

May I suggest reading "Manufacturing Consent" by Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky?
It may not change your mind on the subject, but it's an interesting reading nevertheless.

An amateur photographer has been scooping the international media with his photographs from the front lines of protests and riots (http://www.bbc.com/news/blogs-trending-32497921) in Baltimore.

Not here in North Carolina, where the News and Observer has thru investigative reporting uncovered numerous examples of malfeasance by state and local officials, by corporations, and by non-profits.

Aside from journalists being detained (or not), what about the undoubtedly numerous ordinary citizens who were detained without cause?

How much advertising there is in those newspaper?
If the answer is anything other than "zero", they are not what you think they are.

How long were those people detained?
What happened to them? There they beaten while being detained?
Were they posession taken confiscated?

Arresting people in a riot is not something unusual: If I were you I would be much more worried about NSA and the patriot act, not about police temporarily detaining people during riots.

While the rights of journalists and the independance of the press are 2 real and extremely worrying topics, I doubt this is an example of these problems.

What is more likely is a mistake resulting from the total chaos.

Cheers,
Bernard

I'm under the same impression.
