Title: Catalog Backup is ZIP file in LRcc

I just noticed that when I backup my catalog from LRcc (LR6) it automatically creates a zip file which it never did in LR5.x.  Is this a new feature to save some HD space?

Yes, it is.

It's also an anti-numpty feature. You won't believe how many people opened the backup catalogue and forgot it was a backup, imported new work into it, allowed it to backup again and began using that backup catalogue for new work, allowed....

My LR CC catalog file backup size is about 1/8 the size of the main catalog so the space saving can be significant.
