Title: Epson 9890/9900/7900 printing on thick rigid materials?

Hello!

I know the Epsons can print as thick as 1.5mm media. And we have a straight paper path. The reason I went with Epson over Canon.

I'm about to experiment with some 0.6mm veneer, and some 1mm thick collage paper.

There are setting in the printer for Gap.  wide, wider etc. Is there a specific setting for a specific thickness?

Should I increase the "suction" when dealing with thicker heavier media?

Any other recommendations. I don't want to damage the head.

PS I printed some Matte Canvas. The User settings were 44"(wide) x16" but the cut dimension was 17". Anyway to get the printer to cut the exact length? Is there a minimum length for printing from the roll?

Read the Manual.  There is also a media thickness setting. You can actualiteit check the thickness with the printer.

I have the manual, but Narrow, Wide, Wider Widest have little to do with the real world. I'd assume Widest setting is for 1.5mm media. I wasn't aware of an automated platen gap setting. That is why I asked.

I have a 9890 and several months ago obtained some veneer samples from a company called "Lenderink Technologies" out of Belmont, MI. http://www.lenderink.com.

There veneer has an inkjet receptive coating on it and I believe comes in sheet or roll.

I was just experimenting with it so I just got a bunch of 8.5x11 samples and played with them. All of the samples went through the 9890 as sheets just fine.

I would consider using the settings for the old Watercolor Radiant White sheet paper. It's about as thick as an Epson can take and still print OK.  Epson has since changed the name of the paper, but you still should be able to google for the older paper settings, or give Epson a call.

Rule of thumb, for the 300 and 310W papers I use, which are the thickest, I use the wider or widest platen gap.  You can run into banding issues with the widest setting, at least I do (Epson 9900), and I only use it when I have to.

I have some samples coming in. I have had good success with Golden Digital grounds, though they don't sell a CLEAR Matte. I may have to try InkAid. I believe all are the same chemical coating.
