Title: Unexpected Banding

Hi,

What is causing the banding in the sky in this photo?

Original photo taken in 14 bit  raw, ISO 400, 2s exposure. The banding is visible in LR even before conversion to jpeg. Noise reduction doesn't seem to do much.  Other pictures taken in similar conditions seem to be ok.

maybe I'm missing something due to reduced image size, but looks like clouds (or a break in them) to me.

Looks to me like the reflection of the sunlite background. A 2-second exposure can show the accumulation of a very small amount of light.

I might celebrate the "banding".

Yes, clouds do that sometimes.  I see this effect often when I look across the Juan da Fuca Strait to the Olympic Mountains of WA state.  I think the cloud formation is a result of wind - almost like waves on water.

But I certainly wouldn't vote for banding.
