How does he keep the black backdrop clean in the dust and wind?

Looks to me like he's hitting them with a strobe, possibly in low ambient light.

The meerkat looks to be lit, for instance, with a horizontally oriented strip light up pretty high, which makes for some weird looking catchlights.
