Title: A Meeting of Rock and Sky
Post by: churly on March 17, 2014, 05:12:16 pm
One more in a series of monochromes and then it's time to get back to color.
Critique/suggestions appreciated.

Nice! Don't stay away from monochromes too long, Chuck.

Good light and dramatic sky, well done. I don't know if it would have been possible to change, but I feel the composition is a bit unbalanced, with the cliff faces dominating the left hand side, and not much on the right.

Very nice treatment. I agree with Paulo, the composition could be stronger. Too many disparate and weakly connected elements?

The drama is certainly very evident, and I like that. I do agree that the composition is rather unbalanced: to my eyes, cropping off everything to the left of the first group of rocks provides a very interesting (although undoubtedly wholly different) shot.

I would be tempted to crop out the right 1/3 to 2/5 of the image, keeping a bit more than the left half.

Many thanks everyone for the comments.
You are all right about the balance problem and the elements working against each other.  I definitely struggle with composition in panos, in fact I almost quit shooting them because I ended up cropping them back anyway.  I'm going to have to schedule a dedicated project to shoot enough panos to tighten up my vision.

Thanks for the feedback.  I continue to learn.

I do not struggle so much with the composition, but more with the dark halos on the mountains.
Overall I like the processing, especially the toning color.
I would have wished for a little more foreground though which looks a little cut off to me.
Cropping off from the right would cut away that mighty cloud which speaks to / balances the mountains - so I wouldn't crop here.
Cheers
