While I was in the process of hunting down herons and egrets, this boathouse beckoned in the late afternoon light, so I shot it; and then I got the black crowned heron head shot as a bonus (thanks to Ken and Rich for naming the bird).

I think the heron was wondering why I wasn't paying attention to him anymore, and he let me get in way too close with a very long lens. I may have to consider it for portrait taking, the bokeh is not bad. Yes, I used the pop-up flash for fill light!
;D

The heron's great but it's a shame you cropped off the top of the boathouse.

I agree. The cropping was possibly caused by the focal length not giving enough FOV, but people should remember that taking two overlapping shots will in such cases allow to make a stitched composite. It always helps to have some additional/aternative solutions at hand ...

Hi Jeremy and Bart,
You guys are totally right about the unfortunate lopping off of the roof.
Luckily, I have to chalk it up to late night editing rather than making the wrong choice while shooting. For some reason I shy away from leaving 4:3 frames as is, and tend to try to crop to one of the older standard sizes for 8x10 or 8x12 prints (5:4 and 3:2 ratios). In this case, I made a horrible mistake and the building lost its head. Sort of.
:)
Better now?
