Hi,
sorry that I can't recommend any specific sites that far north, but you really won't be short of places to get great shots. Scotland is one of the most photogenic places on earth (in my opinion).
I love the West Coast, rather further south than you are visiting.
One point, that far north you will have to get up VERY early to catch the dawn, but you could decide to work rather late and use sunsets instead.

Inverness is known as the heart of the highlands because it is well placed for traveling. (Also has a well stocked branch of Jessops...when I was up there for a meeting a couple of weeks back, they had a 1DSii and a Dh2thing in the window.)
40 mins drive south and you are into the Cairngorm National park with its lochs and ancient pine forests.
Others have suggested that you travel west and I would recommend that as well. Head down Loch Ness side to Fort William (Glen Coe is about half an hour south from here and certainly worth a look) then make your way up the western edge. A couple of days should get you as far as Torridon...open space and dramatic anicient hills. I wouldnt be too tempted by the east coast (although there are plenty of distilleries )..When you get into Caithness the landscape becomes ratehr flat and featureless...the real interest is in the sea cliffs but they are hard to get views..Skip John o Groats its not that hot! Nearby there is Dunnet head (with a lighthouse), this quieter and more photogenic.

Glen Affric has some very beautiful woodland - at the south-west of Inverness.

I'm going to be in the UK in July, specifically Inverness. I've got three days free to travel and shoot and I was looking for any recommendations for locations Inverness -> John O'Groats, i.e. the anywhere in the top end.
Any recommendations for good locations? I'm looking for landscapes/old stuff and not too interested in big towns etc.
ideas/recommendations?

My favourite locations are further west. Places like Loch Leven and Bishop's Bay, the white beaches at Morar, Plockton, and Eilean Donan Castle. The Isle of Skye is beautiful. Try Loch Carron too, and Rannoch Moor and Glen Coe. I would camp in Fort William to access these places. I had a wonderful trip there in April.

Heading south from Inverness there is the valley of the river Dee and Balmoral Castle. Heading north from Inverness up the east coast it is quite flat by comparison.

Thanks for the recommendations - that's exactly what I was looking for.
I haven't done the Inverness & northwards trip although I have travelled along the lochs and south to Edinburgh etc. I'll suggest to my shooting partner that we head to the west ...

Hi,
Scotland is a small country, and you can see quite a bit in 3 days. If it were me, I would head to the west coast.
I'd recommend you head from Inverness to Ullapool, which is only 1 hour by car, and then go up to the Inverpolly region. The mountains are spectacular there. Stac Polhaid, Cul Mor, Suilven etc. There is a nice road that takes you round the back of the mountains. Well worth a visit.
From there, just start to head south on the west coast and you'll be immersed in some beautiful lochs and mountains. Ending up in Glen Coe.
Alternatively, if you want to concentrate your time in a location, then I'd just head from Inverness down Loch Ness towards FortWilliam, then into Glen Coe. It's a fabulous region and comprises of some of the most atmospheric landscapes in scotland. Admittedly, they have been photographed to death, but well worth a visit. The journey in a car would only take around 4 hours. Lots of camping / youth hostel and B&B options.
Have a great time. The only thing that will be against you is the weather. Take plenty of waterproofs!

I loved Scotland. I have a lot of shots on my web site of Scotland and of Jacy Andrews. There are a lot of nudes on the site but you can see a lot of old castles we shot at.
I loved the western part of Scotland. We even got down to Hadrians Wall but that is to far for the time you have.
