Yup, they've noticed that wide format prints are now a big part of retail sales.  It's absolutely the last kind of work I would want, but those who are doing it have absolutely no trouble paying their bills.  I wonder if this will light a fire under the world of "temporary art?"

What is POS media? Point of sale prints for retail display/signage ie. behind the counter or cashier? Or are these actual prints for sale in retail shops?   Hmm, I suppose POS media has more pop, is brighter, non-archival... only expected to be used for a season or 2 (3-6 months). Who usually gets this type of work? Ad agencies? I sure wouldn't mind being in the position of having no trouble paying the bills!

Search "mall banners" and "POS banners" for an eyeful.  Or just go hang at the mall or grocery store or any place where people want you to buy things.

There are more darned POS banners in this picture than anybody can count...

and here's an example Rob picked for me...

Yea, more visual pollution and fodder for the landfill. Except for the ladies of course, that's pretty fine.

Sorry, but there are other ways to make art, than printing a photograph on 8x10" cotton rag.
I use a lot of polyester-banners, vinyl, clear film, textiles etc for artists and/or exhibitions.
All improvements and better economy for media, will be benefit for all of us printmakers.

I have been under the impression that most of the POS stuff was done on high speed offset presses.
Am I wrong?

It's very often done with solvent printers, but it does vary.  Depends on the quantity, expected lifespan, indoor/outdoor and then just which vendor is used.

Franchise themed graphics are usually made on industrial grade, super fast solvent printers and then sent to the retail outlets.  But the local stuff is very likely made on the same homey 44" and 60" aqueous printers we all know and love.  One of the biggest catgegories for media suppliers is aqueous based POS and banner materials.  I know a couple fine art guys who do that on the side, it can be comforting as the end of the month draws near.
