Hi all,
I'm doing canvas wraps that mostly have the actual image (as opposed to a colored border or cloned bit of image) as the wrap. As such I'm often finding myself wishing there was a better way to do my enlargement. say I want to make a 20x30 canvas, I'll grab the rectangular selection tool in PS and set the ratio to 2x3, then drag to where I want the front of the canvas. Where I find myself spending too much time is finding a way to tell photoshop to take my selection and enlarge that to 20x30 - but don't crop off the rest, I need that for the wrapped edges. I know the crop tool has size targets, but can I achieve the same thing with the marque? is there an easy way to do this? what are you all doing to size your canvases for print? I don't relish the idea of adding another program to my workflow, but feel like there's got to be a faster way.

If I understand what you want to do correctly, then it should go something like this.
Open image.
Image -> Canvas size
Check off Relative then add on your wrap space needed on both Width and Height. So if you need 1" perimeter then you would set width and height both at 2" - an inch on top, inch on bottom, and inch on each side.
Click Ok.
Select your Rectangular Marquee tool.
Select the white space on one of the sides (doesn't matter which you start with).
Move the rectangular box over the side of the image.
Edit -> Copy
Edit -> Paste
Edit -> Free Transform
Now pull the far side (closest to the edge of picture) to the edge of your "Canvas Size" and this will stretch out that part of your image.
Layer -> Merge Down
Now repeat the process to the other three sides.

Perfect Resize 7 has a whole host of gallery wrap functions, in addition to resizing. It is what I use. You might want to take a look and see if it will do what you want.

But I think Resize 7 is the easiest solution. A little pricey if all you need is the wrapping stuff, but it's also a great tool to have on the shelf for radical upsizing.

Ditto to Perfect Resize.
I used to do it all manually in PS and it took time to do it well. Looked at then Perfect Resize action and bought it on the spot. What took about 10-15 minutes of hand work now takes about a minute automatically including pretty good resizing and mirroring with blurring and darkening the way I do it.
It's paid for itself with just a few wraps!

If Qimage had it 4-5 years ago or added it when I made the request, then I would not have made my own PS actions. Still happy I did that though, there are things not covered in Qimage's method like compensation for canvas shrink in one direction. Qimage does not know an aspect ratio resampling so can not implement that. It does not have a blur step on the mirrored, extruded, etc wraps. There is no selection made on the wrap area where other PS features like a pattern fill or a CS5 content aware fill can be used.

From what I understand of your request, you don't want to extend or manipulate the image, just size it correctly when you crop it to account for the edge wrap. Instead of using the stretcher size, you should just set the crop tool to your total canvas size including borders. Then, you will not have to do anything at all, post crop. I use 2" borders for 3/4" deep stretchers, so I would set the crop tool to 24" x 34" for a 20" x 30" canvas. For the deeper stretchers I use, Fredrix Gallery Wrap bars that are 1 3/8", I use 2 1/2" borders. I would crop to 25" x 35" for the same size canvas with the deeper bars. Is that what you were asking for help with?
FWIW, I do most of my printing for artists (and a few photographers), and used to use PS actions, but have switched to Perfect Resize exclusively for my gallery wraps. Genuine Fractals sucked at it, but they made it easy with the current version (with the lame new name). I wind up often using content aware fill to avoid repeated artist signatures or odd edge artifacts, and sometimes get into more elaborate cloning and copying when a face or other detail is too close to the edge and looks stupid when mirrored.
I'd find simple images that have enough original content to use that as my bleed to be a piece of cake. Hard to get much simpler than that, and much more forgiving to stretch, too. I know that some people have elaborate methods of poking a pinhole in the corner, etc. to register gallery wraps. I just have templates for the sizes I use and register everything from the trimmed canvas edge, which I always keep consistent. It is really easy that way. I have one template for the corner registration, and one for trimming the excess canvas in the folded corner.

Woah, thanks for the tip. I refused to pay almost $300 for it, but $99 is totally worth it. FWIW, the link still worked for me too.

my clients and artist partner wants larger images and based on comments here I finally bought the genuine Fractals app(now perfect....) after waiting many years. price this afternoon still 99 us.. will not know how well it works for two weeks until I get home. I hope my partner likes the images .She has a good eye for colours and images.
Guess a new version will be coming out shortly. always the case when price drops.... then pay for the update..
Adobe just offered a special on PSE9 (new version must be coming ...)

Regarding Perfect Resize v7, it looks to me that the “full” price of the Pro version is $299.95 with a sale price of $159.95.
The Standard version “full” price is $159.95 with a sale price of $99.95.
Unfortunately you need the Pro version to get the Canvas Wrap feature.

The deal must have changed then. My sales receipt clearly shows Pro edition - full, unit price $299.95, discount $200, final price $99.95.
