From searching I have seen images with the morning sun just south enough to be in the frame cresting the horizon and still lighting the cliff rocks of the North Rim. What two times of the year does this happen?

I don't know the answer myself, but I bet you can "back into" the answer using the Photographer's Ephemeris.
