Is this thread an advertisement for Phase one?
Up to the mods of course, but I don't think so.
It's hard to gauge from press releases what features people actually care about. Some are flashy but get very little real world use and others are subtle but make a big difference to every day work.
I'd be just as interested in a poll on which of the H4 versus H3 features (battery option in the works for for the H4D-60, true focus, etc) people actually use.
-

Actually Nick, I think the other thread listing "buy me" is the ad. This thread is just the market research. :'(
Anyway if they really wanted to add a favorite feature usable in the real world, it would be the color correction of video, (instead of just sorting) especially pro rez 422, and/or h264 in 12 bit.

There's a lot of discussion about this. My question is would you really want to use a program, the entire UI of which is geared towards photography, to do sophisticated color editing of motion imagery?
Seems to me like it would impossible/futile for Phase One to try to cram that functionality into Capture One when they would then be competing against Apple's Color or similar.

As a huge volume of still photographers have migrated to some extent to video, it's probably a great time to have a program that mimics the interfaces they are accustom to.
Apple's color is ok, not great, not really bad, (I would NOT call is sophisticated, but requires a whole different learning curve that few still photographers and their assistants will take the time to master.
RED has a good interface for base corrections and since it is proprietary to their systems, works well.
My point is more times than not, we shoot some video with a still session and obviously we want to get as close to the same look as possible from the video to the stills, at least in first view in web galleries.
When I go outside for grading, I make stills of the video, work them in photoshop, print and take those to the colorists to match. It saves thousands of dollars in time for the colorists to know from the start where we are going.
For video finish, there are outside systems a whole lot more robust and in 12 bit that work much better than Apple's color.
We do a great deal of video correction in CS5 and 6 as we are use to the interface.
Anyway this isn't a deal maker or breaker for me, but if phase wants to gain market share over adobe, this would be a way to do it, though as we know Phase will do what they want.
Always have.

Does this mean the NR has not been improved? ???
That would certainly qualify as the most needed change IMO. v5's NR seems like a step backwards from v3.7.x to me, and it's certainly blown away by LR3/ACR6.

Any real samples ? I haven't really seen any ACR/LR images with noise which looks better than C1.
-
Currently, can't access Phase site for "Maintenance notice".
So is version 6 a major upgrade as a paid upgrade? Version 5 was my last included upgrade so not sure I would pay for a new version.
Progress is good, but if it just matches Lightroom 3 for the most part then not enough for me. Major leap frogging is a must to get these apps to make "any itch in daddy's pants".
EDIT: Found the upgrade info. Poor timing for the Phase site to have maintenance, maybe better it was done yesterday, pre-announcement and not during. I'll never understand them.
Yes it's a major version - paid upgrade. Check out the features. If it's not worth $99 (minus 10%) to you then don't get it. But honestly if local adjustments, full screen mode, keystone correction, smart albums, GPU acceleration for image adjustments, loupe and the other half dozen significant features are not enough to justify $99 then you probably aren't using Capture One Pro much as it is.
The maintenance was to place all the Capture One 6 info up on the website. You can't launch before you launch. There was a problem however that took them a bit longer than they had targeted (press releases were all embargoe'd until 2pm EST and they planned to have the website up right at 2pm but there was a technical glitch that took them a couple of hours to fix. Perfectly understandable and nothing to get worried about - it's up and running now.

I think it's fair to say that most of the changes in this version came directly from user and dealer suggestions. So they do definitely listen. I keep a running list of suggestions going all the way back to the initial release of Capture One 4.0 and 90% of them have been implemented (I'm not arrogantly saying that they were implemented purely because of me).
But you are right that in the end it is their call. As I think it should be - getting user feedback on software is essential but creation by committee is rarely as good as creation by commander. :-) Getting a bit off topic...
Video is definitely something all camera companies and photo software makers are looking at and Phase is no exception (as exhibited by a good first addition of functionality in 6.0). I can't imagine a scenario in which Phase One doesn't continue to work on bettering the video/photo hybrid workflow - I was only saying that I doubt you're going to see Capture One taking on more complete video-only software head-to-head anytime soon.

That would certainly qualify as the most needed change IMO. v5's NR seems like a step backwards from v3.7.x to me, and it's certainly blown away by LR3/ACR6.
Color NR improvements are specifically listed in the release notes. Discussions with the lead engineer for this area of the program encouraged me to test color noise reduction on ultra-high ISOs such as the 5D Mark 2 at e.g. ISO 2560 (or was it 25,600 - i.e. hi2?).
That said, I have very few real world experiences in which v5 is outperformed by LR and even fewer examples where it is outperformed v3.7 when it comes to noise. HOWEVER, noise vs. detail retention and the way in which a software shows the noise vs. detail has a pure technical element (snr, lppm etc) and a larger aesthetic quality and I'd be the first to say that C1 errors on the side of allowing a grain structure and retaining image detail when compared to some other noise reduction methods (I'm thinking here more of some of the LR plugins than LR itself) where favoring a smoothed look at the loss of image detail is targeted.
Also C1 has more total sliders/controls for noise reduction which is nice in that you have more control over how the noise will be reduced, but bad in that it requires a bit more user knowledge/action to establish their preferred look (which can then be saved as a style so you don't have to do it for each image).
Anyway the point is if C1's noise reduction look is not your favorite then that's a perfectly valid opinion - but I must say that I get far more positive feedback about noise reduction in C1 than negative feedback (from users with a wide variety of experience in other developers).

That's good news. And I must admit that my real quarrel with v5 is more the way it applies NR by default to high ISO images, and especially those where exposure is boosted even a little bit. It wipes out detail to an apalling degree, and I haven't found a way to change the default behavior (whereas I usually found v3.7.x's default NR pretty much on the mark). But I've also found it to produce a lot more in the way of chunky artifacting than any of those other choices.
So, I'm really looking forward to seeing that particular improvement in v6.
Thanks,
Nill

Local adjustments, specifically local moiré adjustments, is enough for me to be quite happy plunking down the
$99 $89.10 for an upgrade.

Ah! Yes, couldn't agree more. Really the defaults in version 5 were absolutely awful for most cameras at very high ISO. I don't know if those defaults have changed - haven't looked yet, but it's kind of a moot point for me as I recommend every one establish their own presets/defaults. In the noise reduction tab just select the down arrow and select "save as defaults". You can also create different presets as styles. Now that you can apply styles to images upon CF card import or while tethering you can easily/quickly access exactly the settings you prefer. Very fast for the workflow and very good for image quality.
-
Actually all the new features are very good and very welcomed.
Then again for me personally there's nothing I am particularly thrilled about… I would have loved to see other improvements, namely customizable brightness of the user interface and advanced color management options (black point compensation for the translation to the monitor profile / switachable CMM).
So for me personally the best of the new features is the option to stack presets and the local adjustments (in particular for local moiré correction).
As to the perspective correction… I'd consider this feature as (almost) useless unless the lens tools allow the correction of complex distortions. Distortion correction is still one of C1's weak points.
So I will continue to process without any cropping and without any rotation and run my images through Alpa Lens Corrector and first then apply further perspective corrections (if needed). Besides, Photoshop's perspective correction (and rotation) still provides a slightly "sharper" result (i.e. little less image degradation due to interpolation than C1).
I've noticed that V6 created a folder for plug-ins (in ~/library/application support/capture one/plug-ins). Promising!
-
At first attempt, video playback is not working. A folder of 5DII original clips H.264 videos only shows less than half as visible thumbs and those won't play. Will try again tomorrow.
just tried a 1min full HD video in AppleProRes (HQ) codec. No trouble at all here...
Just don't know why I would watch a video in C1 (which requires to import it first...).
-

IMHO LR3 NR really is better than C1 v5 (who knows about v6?) - at least for the P20 I shoot and also its better than Phocus' NR for my ixpress 528c images. I have a memory that the NR in C1 v3.7 could achieve a nicer film like quality for high ISO P20 images but it might be the same. Curious to see what C1 6 will do.

At the top of my Wish List would be a version of Capture One that did not use Sessions. It is the one thing I hate about the software. I can't get my head around it, and I really don't want to. I have been told that I can use Capture One and "ignore" Sessions, but the damn thing keeps cropping up. It seems that the functionality of the whole program is built on top of Sessions, and I am constantly trying to operate as if Sessions do not exist, but they still do under the hood somewhere.
-
I really like the new smart albums feature. I really like being able to sort images quickly for selects. This helps a lot!
-
I would love to have a local adjustment for clarity...or ideally of all the other adjustment tools too! Eleanor

Not just the noise reduction of high iso files.
Adobe rendering engine is better of C1 5.x on DSLR files at any iso.

Hi Doug:
Curious if you have been working with 6 for a while or are you still testing it out. I'm always interested to get the Doug approval that its stable enough to make the upgrade.
Thanks!

I totally agree! Never use sessions, don't understand them, don't need them and don't want to spend my time trying to learn about them when I could spend that time processing my RAW files accessed from their folders on my hard drive directly. Eleanor

Just save the "session" in your pictures folder, right next to the iPhoto "session" and Lightroom "session" and Aperture "session :)
Maybe it will work out for you if you think of the session the same way you would for these other programs which all operate in a similar way. You can then go on to create capture and process folders anywhere else you like. You'll just have to remember to empty the Capture One trash can every once in a while.

Does V6 allow for direct adjustment of camera functions of a DSLR (canon) in tethered shooting?

I never recommend ANY software at the X.0 stage for use in a serious production environment. Whether it is from Apple, Adobe, Microsoft, or Phase One.
That said, I'm actually pretty surprised at the (relatively) small number of bugs I and our customers have found. Still, you'll live longer and have less gray hairs if you only install X.0 on not-critical-for-production computers.
Most of the serious bugs I've seen relate to not uninstalling previous versions (http://www.captureintegration.com/2008/11/20/uninstalling-capture-one-4-on-mac/) of Capture One or computer/GPU specific bugs with the Open CL feature (in which case disabling Open CL in the preferences fixes the issue).

One of the biggest bugs is that it won't show a full image in the viewer. You can't even pan
to the bottom of the image. This is on the Windows version of course.
It makes you wonder how it got released like this. It is the first thing you notice when you
click on an image.

What you mean is on your computer, with your graphics card, your operating system, your monitor settings (e.g. "false DPI" available in some windows versions) etc etc etc it's not working.
That's how it gets released with such a bug - they are almost always specific to a setup that was not on any of the test systems at Phase One or any of the beta testers.
Of course very few of our customers (us being Capture Integration, a dealer) use Windows so I cannot verify for you that this bug is not wider spread.

Local adjustments and capture pilot.

My workflow reflects the way I photograph, and I don't think I am unique. I never shoot tethered. I go into the field to photograph, fill up a bunch of CF cards, and then download the raw files into a folder for that location and date. I copy that file to multiple internal and external drives. All I want to do is import the raw files in place in the folder where I downloaded them. I don't want the program doing anything to the contents of that folder. I don't want it to be treated as a Session, I don't want the program asking me about Sessions, I don't want to see Sessions in the Library. I don't see why Capture One cannot be configured so it operates perfectly well without Sessions. Give us the choice. Two modes. One with Sessions, one without Sessions. Seems easy.
-
That's exactly how I work. I don't even know what a session is. Don't want to know. And I've been using C1 happily for five or more years... it's just fine.

Exactly!
Every new job/shoot needs its own file name, job number and unique file structure. In the professional environment I imagine everyone uses sessions whereas the enthusiast has no need to structure their shoots in such a regimental way.
Sessions is way Capture One has always been and the jewel in its crown for busy photographers. Everything has its place and is easy to find from your archive if the need arrises in the future without the need to wade through thousands of files in one large library.
-
I have my RAW files in many separate folders and sub folders on my hard drives...ie: Colorado 09, 10 etc, Antarctica, Texas, People, Abstracts, and so on. All Capture One information is in each folder. I simply go to my Library on C1 , select the folder I want to work in and work away. I have ONE import folder on my Mac desktop and all new imports go there initially then I just drag those files to the specific folders (such as above) and all C1 info gets dragged with those files too. I have one central trash folder for everything. Simple
Eleanor

I usually don't import the raw files in the field on my laptop. I just download them into separate folders each day labeled by location and date. So, when I return home and copy the folders with the raws to an internal hard drive, I open Capture One and "import" them in the same folder they are already in. I frequently get dialogue boxes opening asking about Sessions, and often have to close out of capture One because it WANTS a Session. It won't take no for an answer. The problem appears to be that the program is built on top of the sessions concept, and when you don't use them, you need to use workarounds that the program doesn't easily accept. It feels like I am trying to use a round peg with a square hole.
I would appreciate it if Phase One provided a roadmap for how to work without Sessions. Just folders of images downloaded in the field.
For an example of what happens when you fool with Mother Nature: http://www.captureintegration.com/2010/09/03/capture-one-starting-slowly-technical-notes/
-
My folder structure is pretty darn regimented. In fact, that's precisely why I never wanted C1 (or LR or anything else) monkeying with it.
I have over 100k images available on my website. Occasionally I get a print order from a shoot five or six years ago. I have no trouble at all going straight to it. I don't want somebody else's idea of database structure fouling that up for me.

... how to work without Sessions. Just folders of images downloaded in the field.
well, just start C1 (this will open your default session "Capture One" ), go to the library and click on the respective folders in the system-folders tab. Done.
There is one drawback to your (and Eleanore's) workflow. C1 cashes session folders respectively "favorite folders". When you click on the desired folder under library->system folders you should right click on the folder and set it as a so called "favorite folder" (C1 then reloads the files in this folder much faster after a restart of the software). But if you have too many favorite folders (i.e. too many files) within your default session this will slow down C1. With different sessions (as opposed to different folders within one session) C1 only cashes the files of the respective session.
I don't understand in how far it is complicated to create a session. A session is basically just a folder containing the raw files, the respective image settings, the session file and 4 subfolders. Instead of creating a folder that is called, say, "Colorado 09"... just create a session that is called "Colorado 09" and either copy your raw files to that folder or use C1's import tool to copy them to the session folder. Actually it's that simply.
-
...and either copy your raw files to that folder or use C1's import tool to copy them to the session folder. Actually it's that simply.
That's the part I don't want to do. I already have my RAW files where I want them. And I have C1 set to keep its detritus inside the respective source folder. Works for me.

Is it really faster? On my computer it develops images at the same speed as latest c5 pro version. Im on win7 64bit 12gb ram amd 6core processor.
I dont have open cl support on my computer. But on my brothers the gpu usage was zero when we used the program and developed images. He is on core i5 with 16gb of ram win7 x64bit.
-
That exactly what I do. I have many many folders with lots of images and preformance is fine doing things this way. Eleanor
PS ...also I would LOVE to see capture one have a History option too. There are so many times I want to go back to view a processing state and can't ...
Don't understand the issue. Go to System Folders in the Library tab and select your folder of images, done, nothing else to it. When you want to output point the processing to your desired folder, done, nothing to it. No need to use Sessions, no forcing of using Sessions.

Likely his graphics card is not on the list of initially supported GPUs. Nearly all the recent mac models' GPUs and many popular Windows GPUs are included, and the list will grow with future releases.
"Performance increase" is kind of vague I know but I've noticed real world improvements in
- launch time, especially when opening large sessions
- refresh after adjustments (requires a supported GPU)
- scrubbing through large folders of images
I've not yet tested head to head for processing.

Doug, do you see the gradient mask (filter) similar to the one in Adobe getting into C1? Frustrating to develop two exposure to get darker sky fx
If you're asking if, after spending considerable R+D to create a Local Adjustments Tool which that Phase One will leave it exactly as it is I can definitely say "no chance". This is the first implementation of a Local Adjustments Tool in Capture One. I think it's a great start and will save many users a lot of time while maintaing excellent image quality (much better to dodge and burn in-raw than in Photoshop after processing). However if you look at the history of other tools in Capture One such as the LCC tool, color editor, lens correction, albums, keyboard shortcut customization etc you'll see a history of continually improving tools after their initial introduction.
If you're asking for specific future features and timetables - "no comment".

Its compatible.

Yes but as far as I understand it, the graphic card adds NOTHING to develop speed only to image refresh speed.

Sorry Doug, didn't see how powerful the Local adjustment tool really is. Simply great
thanks,

...I'm actually pretty surprised at the (relatively) small number of bugs I and our customers have found...
Most of the serious bugs I've seen relate to not uninstalling previous versions (http://www.captureintegration.com/2008/11/20/uninstalling-capture-one-4-on-mac/) of Capture One or computer/GPU specific bugs with the Open CL feature (in which case disabling Open CL in the preferences fixes the issue)...

Well, shall we say we just don´t agree on this? To me it seems the software wasn´t really ready for prime time. Have you been over at the support forum at Phase´s website?

Support forums are a great place to read a list of bugs, not a great place to judge the relative frequency within the overall installed base.
I could direct you to bug-filled forums at adobe.com, apple.com, and every other software company forum.
That said I think I've said here and elsewhere very clearly that we do not recommend using X.0 software from any software maker in any production environment. They will always have some bugs. My statement is both positive and negative in that regard. I've been surprised by the small number of bugs for a X.0 software release and I stand by that statement after an additional several days of use and phone calls from customers - but thats a very relative statement.
We can all complain and moan (rightfully so) that software makers should not release public software until it's perfect and free of bugs. However, two decades of software releases from Microsoft, Adobe, Apple, Phase One, and every other software I've ever used has shown that the X.0 software release is not perfect and has (often significant) bugs. If you're still downloading X.0 software and using it for important work (rather than to find out what's coming down the road and see "what's up") then we cannot understand each other - we won't be talking the same language. Right or wrong - X.0 is not production-ready software. It was true of LightRoom 1.0, Aperture 3.0, Snow Leopard (10.6.0), just to mention a few recent popular well-respected software vendors. Individual users may or may not have noticed bugs in those software packages depending.
I'm not defending Phase One (or Apple, or Adobe); I'm just being practical. Don't use X.0 software in production environments.
