Title: Egret and oyster beds

Before sunrise, Morehead City, NC. Nikon D-700 and Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8.

I very much like how you framed the bird around the water plants. And the white appears to be spot on. Very nice. When you write F2.8, does that indicate the lens being used or the aperture that was employed?

Thanks for your comment. 2.8 is the max aperture of the lens, the photo was taken at f/3.5 and 1/50 of a sec (on a tripod). Those are not actually water plants but exposed oyster beds.

I should have surmised that from the title! Also had a look at your site. Really like your work on patterns.

 Yup... composition/framing spot on, and the white isn't blown out, either.  Well done!

I'll be the baddie here and say that my first thought was that the black at the top of the picture gave me the impression of crushing the remainder of the picture below it.

It's a very pretty scene, but I'd like to see some detail in the oyster beds. They're just a dark mass, while the bird is clearly visible. The light seems fairly even so it seems just a little odd visually that the oyster beds are in shadow. But overall I like the shot.

I actually darkened the oyster beds a little because my aim in the photo was to contrast the bright delicacy of the egret with the perhaps ominous and foreboding oyster beds.

Could you post the undarkened version? I'd like to be able to compare them.

I appreciate your interest, but I prefer not to post photos that I have not edited. Trust me, the oyster beds are a dark gray and undifferentiated mass that is of no interest!
