NEC P221W S/V, with NEC branded puck for Spectraview ii. TG18 QC test pattern is the first thing the puck sees and reads. Is the correct?
delta E expressed as 5, 6, or 7.
If the TG18 QC test pattern is not to be shown during profiling, how is it gotten rid of?

What OS and version? I did a class a few weeks ago where the Macs were on 10.5 and saw this AFTER updating SpectraView II to 1.1.05 from 1.1.04 , thought it was rather odd. It popped up for a few seconds and disappeared. Doesn’t do this with my version running OS X 10.6. and SpectraView II 1.1.05.

Dell computer, about nine years old, Windows XP. He is a client. He can only use the vga cable.

Does not happen either with my OS 10.5.8 on G5 dual 2.3.
I use the DVI cable.
Andrew, when the test pattern did show up, was the profiling
continued, and was the delta e horrendous?

If you are using an analog video connection (i.e. VGA) the pattern should pop up for a few seconds while the analog levels are automatically adjusted by the display (the sensor is not being used at that point). It should then disappear and proceed as normal.
You should not be seeing such high delta-e values though. Have you removed the white plastic cover from the sensor?
I would highly recommend investing $60+ in a new video card with DVI out if at all possible.

That IS what happens. Are you saying this is because of the vga cable and/or the 9 year old video card?

Yes. The test pattern is displayed so that the monitor can internally auto-calibrate the analog video signal levels (which will vary from one PC to the next) using the test pattern signal. With a digital signal there is no variation.

Issue resolved!
Client went out and purchased a brand new PC with DVI port!!!
Client saw your writings and was convinced he needed to match his new NEC P221W S/V with a modern machine.
Last night I explained what he was doing was like putting huge radial aircraft engine on a weak Taylor craft airframe. He got the message. (But I am not sure my analogy is correct)
