Title: Finally Did it! Got me some MF Gear : RZ+DL28
Post by: gotspeed on May 19, 2010, 05:22:45 pm
Still in the process of receiving all this, but I had to tell somebody  .  I picked up a RZ67ProII+110 f/2.8 and AFD3/Dl28 with both 80mm and 55mm.  I will need a telephoto for the afd, probably the 150 (d or not d?) . And and curious about the RZ, what lens would be a good studio portait lens? Is 110 too short? Of course I need this magic plate to put the aptus on the RZ... I know Leaf and Mamiya make one, which one would better?

Since I never shot an RZ, nor had MF back, I will most likely be over my head for some time. Hopefully, all the time reading this forum will come in useful.

Hard to beat the 140mm Mamiya lens. 110 is a great all around lens, good in the studio if you have room to back up a bit.

Thanks Terence,

i haven't done the mental cruching, but it seems people are referring to 1.5x crop on the RZ vs 645.  So 140mm in is about 105  and the 110m is 80mm in terms of 35mm. It's also a macro as well.  This could work for close up/head shots..

Looking through some old posts,  ixpressraf likes the rz 140 and 150 as well... What would be main diffs. Just get 'em both..

Congatulations Mark - you have a nice versatile assemblage of camera platforms, lots of directions for you to journey from.

Here's a link to a quick comparison test of Mamiya/Phase One 120mm/f4, 150mm/f3.5, 150mm/f2.8 (D):

http://www.captureintegration.com/tests/lens/ (http://www.captureintegration.com/tests/lens/)

The 150mm/f3.5 is a bargain, you can see it does sharpen up nicely by f5.6, but the 150mm/f2.8 D gives you nearly an extra stop, shallower depth of field, and clears up a lot of the purple. And it's sharper at f2.8 than the non D 150mm is at f3.5. So really, you're gaining more than a stop in actual usability.

Woo-hoo! Congratulations! Enjoy your new kit! On the RZ, your crop factor should be almost 1.5x (slightly less) with the DL28.

Thanks Steve,

Now about that adapter...  I assume leaf dealers have them? Anybody doesn't need theirs anymore?

We don't have any used in stock, unfortunately....especially since they have dramatically increased in price (for new units). I don't believe there is any difference between a Mamiya or Leaf version.

I'll keep a lookout, though.

I decided to add 120 macro and the 150 f/3.5 for now.  JR was talking about 150 being kind long on the cropped backs. Since 120 is shorter and sharper, it's a nice to have, but I think I want to have AF option as well, even if it has to be stopped down for best results. Will the 110LS work on a afdiii?  I'm thinking maybe eventually of getting  a DF body , so if I were to get a D lens, it would make sense to get the 110 instead of 150  be with that in mind.

if I ever get the adapter might get the 140/150 for the RZ. Maybe I'll shoot some film with it? One time I was in a lab and an older gentleman brought a negative for a reprint.   They scanned it on the mini-dlab, and i was really impressed with the depth/feel of the environmental portrait.  It really stood out despite the low res scan, that's why I asked where it came from, it was a 6x7.

I think im getting too far ahead..

I recently purchased one of the Leaf RZ adapters, viewfinder mask as well as both (though you need just one) sync cables are included. I can't comment on the Mamiya adapter as I haven't used one. As for lenses, I'm currently using just the 110mm and find it great for portraits (on an Aptus22), of course it also depends on your style of shooting. I also hear great things (but haven't used one) about the 180mm, though I'm personally tempted by the 210mm APO. It should be a little long for indoors, however. Unfortunately my rental place does not have one to test.

Don't Know if this is still relevant, but the Mamiya adaptor, which was made for the ZD had contacts on it, which if used with the Leaf backs meant the battery in the RZ drained VERY quickly, but it did allow you to use the metered prism I believe. The work-around was to slightly rotate the adaptor plate when you weren't shooting so the contacts weren't touching.

Welcome to the family!

Well, you definitely don't want the electronic adapter.  You should get this one: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/6050...dapter_Kit.html (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/605094-REG/Mamiya_903_545_DL28_Back_Adapter_Kit.html) , the product number is the same as the Leaf adapter, so I'm assuming they're identical, whether you get it from Leaf or Mamiya.

Holy hell, it's $1,600.  I remember a few months ago it was way cheaper.  And a year ago, I could've sworn it was $500 or something.  Maybe I'm dreaming.  What are you medium format companies smoking?  The RZ used to be the CHEAP and excellent camera to use a digital back with, now a simple adapter costs as much as a Canon 7D.  A$$holes.

I'd look on eBay.

Congrats on your new kit!

Re. the M645 short teles...remember that all versions of the 120 f4 macro are manual focus (even the "AF" ones). So if that's not a deal killer, consider the manual focus 150mm f2.8 A lens as well. For 20% of the cost of a 150mm f2.8 D lens (check e.g. KEH right now...they're unbelievably undervalued if you ask me), this thoroughly outperforms the 150mm f3.5 (any version) and is just as fast as the D lens. Although not labelled as an APO, it was a relatively late design (early 1990s) for the M645 system and it does have some type of ULD glass, with a very low degree of aberration. (The same applies to the 120mm macro: not labelled ULD or APO, just A; but regarded as delivering APO-like performance in practice). In fact I would not be surprised if the 150mm D lens is not the same optical formula as the A lens, just wrapped in AF mechanics; but I would have to research this a little harder to be sure.

It's a pity that Capture Integration didn't include the 150mm A lens in their test that Steve linked in this thread, but I guess that they were only focusing on lenses that can still be bought new.

As far as the AFD to RZ adapter goes, when I was looking, and searched throughout the forums, some people had no problems with the Mamiya adapter while others did. Synching seemed to be an issue if trying to use the electronic contacts of the Mamiya adapter. Many who had the Mamiya adapter ended up covering the contacts with tape and using a synch cord anyway. If you can find a Leaf adapter used, that would be the way to go.

Already lots of good lens advise. My favorite RZ lenses are 110, 140, 150, 180.

Congrats

Yes, but, probably more importantly, there's a finite amount of time that can be dedicated to tests, comparisons, etc. The simplest test can be incredibly time consuming to do right. We have an extensive list of tests we would love to do, and by necessity, we place limits on the amount of products we select for tests. Especially with lenses, there are so many options, so yeah, we do have to be have some limiting factors.

That being said, exactly, for manual focus, the 150mm/2.8 A lens is a good call.

You may consider selling your Rz Pro II and going for Pro IID. HX701 adapter may be bought on ebay $600-700 new. If you get lucky with the body, you may wind up with a newer RZ Pro IID body and an adapter which doesn't need sync cables for the same price as Pro II with adapter plate.

Now you got me interested in that 105-210, it's availale used. If the 150 3.5 is not all that hot wide open, and this zoom is constant 4.5, would it make sense to get the zoom? How good are mamiya zooms vs a prime? Is there are penalty in optics vs prime, like in 35mm world? It seems big lens too, but you get flexibility.

I just noticed  the big difference in price of the adapters makes the cheaper body a mute point.  . If i had known it.... The other way to make sense out of the situation now is to find it for less than new price of the HX701.

All you need to attach the AFD fit Digi back to your RZ is the focusing screen showing the crop of the sensor, the adaptor plate to go from the four pin attachment down to the AFD mount and the small flash sync cable from the lens to the digi back that transfers the 'shot signal'.

Peartree have all three in stock ready to go. Oh, and yes... they're based in London England.

It's here, It's here , the DL28 that is.   Adorama had the rz67 adapter cheaper than BH, so I got it there. Still it was like buying two proii bodies.  I don't think you can go wrong with a system where for 1k you can buy a boat load of lenses.

On the AFD the 150 is also very nice and good wide open if you get the focus right that is
But most lenses are very nice wide open, that is what struck me comparing them to L glass from Canon, the difference between wide open and closed down 1-2 stops is not as huge as with my Canon lenses (some lenses excluded which are great wide open).

I sold the 150 because I found out I loved the 105-210 much more and used it almost exclusively on the 645AFD.
It can be bought on ebay for a good price most of the times.

On the adaptor plate, I bought one about a year or maybe more ago and paid app 650 euros for it.
How can one see if it's the electronic plate ?
I do need cables but I'm using a RZ67ProII (non D)

Might just have to try them both (150/105-210).  I can't help with identifying adaptors not having seen one in real life.

Looking through the leaf installation guide for the RZ, the show at least two cables, one is "camera control" any bodyknow what that is? So there's 3 jacks, including the camera control, one for flash and one for the shutter sync to the rz most likely.

It can be bought on ebay for a good price most of the times.

On the adaptor plate, I bought one about a year or maybe more ago and paid app 650 euros for it.
How can one see if it's the electronic plate ?
I do need cables but I'm using a RZ67ProII (non D)

My first impression of the Mamiya body and a digiback, since this is really the first time  Things happen at a lot slower pace, and seems to me it has a pretty noticable kick, compared to the dslrs when the shutter fires. But not really surprised by that, just have to get used to it.  I won't bore you with all the other things as you have been rehashing them forever.  It's kind of heavy and the grip isn't all that large.

The leaf back has a pretty slick interface with the touch screen.  I see why you have been crying for better lcds for previewing images though.

Also, this might finally be the reason for that mac pro i've been delaying for ever. The Leaf Capture is still in Beta for Windows. So far I got some weird errors popping up "missing disk" or something like that. And on my  windows 32 bit Lightroom, after playing with an imported DNG files for a couple of minutes, the dreaded inverted out of memory/grey background showed up. Usually I get that after an hour or two with canon files before I restart.  I guess first step could be get windows 7 64 and see if that helps but I hate to wipe out this machine and start over. And this box doesn't seem to be able to connect to LC either, not that it really matters but not fun.  I was thinking of either using  9-6 pin adapter and using one a laptop with 1394a, but i have a feeling it might not work.

In reality you only need to connect the thin cable.
The larger cable is not needed for normal operation.

I figured at the point where the MF can be had for the same price as a DSLR is the time to get it. I was very patient for years.. I even bought an older 1ds so I would leave room for MF stuff instead of blowing it on a new one.

There is very little money in the banks to steal.  I think they are all mostly bankrupt right now, dead fish float up every friday. FDiC is bankrupt too, heck every government is going bankrupt.  The have managed to enslave us and hide the truth about  how money works.   Once you have a basic understanding of the fiat monetary system/central bankers/fractional reserve banking/deficits  you realize it's kind of a scam.  After that, money, becomes a little less stressful issue.  The banksters make it and destroy at their whim out of nothing.  I was kind shell shocked by the last two years. But having looked into it a bit,  like anything else having even a glipse of the internals makes it less scary. It's really worth knowing something about such a basic concept as money. We work for it all life and don't even know what it is, where it comes from or who controls it.  Once you grasp that you give yourself the loan when you take money from the bank, and it's not the banks or other peoples' money it's a lot easier to  deal with.  The bank takes the risk of the colleteral not going down. Well they gambled and lost. Why should you aganonize over their risk. They had it good for a long time.

I suggest "money as debt I and II" and "Meltup"  on youtube for some good intro.  To this day, the lawful money of the USA is an ounce of silver, the notes we all call money is not money, it's an IOU of the bankrupt fed bank. I think I'd rather have a tangible good that I will appreciate for very long time and could be used to do honest work, than a pile of devaluing fraudulent paper.  Of course real savings and capital are good things. Spending beyond earnings is not a good idea.  Have you noticed the price of good lenses, they just keep going up, lenses (like precious metals) are better savings than cash!

Seriously though, I think I got a heck of a deal on the dl or the prices have dropped a lot. And the rest is really not that much used. I feel a bit guilty, not doubt. But don't scream at the manufacturers for higher prices. It's a direct result of the scam of deficits/fiat money.  Alan Greenspan in 1966 called inflation a hidden theft of savings by the statist governments, that was before he turned to the dark side.  Sorry for the off topic rant but you brought up the subject...

And if this stuff interests you, "Money Changers " is a must watch. This goes all they back to 1500's and the Bank of England.   For a blow your mind account of how the US was taken over by the fed/irs and how they have been manipulating this country since 1913 lookup "Secrets of the Federal Reserve" pdf, website, 8 hour mp3 is available. This should be elementary education of all adults.

“THERE IS NO MEANS OF AVOIDING THE FINAL COLLAPSE OF A BOOM BROUGHT ABOUT BY CREDIT EXPANSION. THE ALTERNATIVE IS ONLY WHETHER THE CRISIS SHOULD COME SOONER AS THE RESULT OF A VOLUNTARY ABANDONMENT OF FURTHER CREDIT EXPANSION OR LATER AS A FINAL AND TOTAL CATASTROPHE OF THE CURRENCY SYSTEM INVOLVED.”

Ludwig von Mises – Austrian Economist (1881- 1973)

I can just imagine empty shelves when Benny bucks drop from the helicopter,  but nobody will take them in trade. An anctode from a Wiemar, a  city slicker tried to buy some food from a farmer and he was told he doesn't accept bankster confetti. That's what Mises is talking about. The only other option is austerity, riots ala Greece.  Greece can't devalue as they don't have their own currency/central bank. But ECB caved in also and now helicopters are flying in Europe dropping money as well. You never know some day I'll be able to trade a lens or two for some eggs and milk, while others are pushing wheelbarrow with dollars into the store. Only storm clouds ahead. Ben already stated his position, will he stick to it? Another important qoute regarding government obligations from Greenspan, "We can guarantee payment in nominal terms but not purchasing power". Taken from the two brightest minds in finance according to some (or two biggest con man). You be the judge, which option will they take? So be careful, can't go wrong with some insurance against full implosion.

Here's one image you should never forget, if we don't crash, this is starting to look like the beginning of a parabolic curve.

First outdoor shot, just after rain cloudy.. ISO200 80mm f2.8 processed in lightroom using embeded profile. Which I assume comes in the raw file from Leaf? THe other option is ACR 4.6 which is brighter but not as saturated I don't think.  Vibrance, contrast, sharpening added, with detail/mask.

The only thing ACR keeps from Leaf is the Grey Balance if you ask for as shot, the rest is ACR...
(Hope this is useful.)

So what's embedded then?  For canon they supply profiles, which mimic canons native styles.  But as you say it also comes from ACR....

So much for Adorama, first email it's on backorder then order was canceled for for pricing error.  Still looking...  for 903-545...

I received my rz yesterday,  It didn't take too long comprehend how to work it,  glad it came with a manual. Well I did also get two rolls of film, maybe I should just forget about the adapter. The viewfinder is huge.

I wish someone had told my government (Ireland) about the Ludwig von Mises quote, every day from 2003 to 2008. Ah, they'd have ignored it anyway.
At least they were the quickest govt within the EU to take hard corrective action, starting summer 2008; if they hadn't, we would be in the same boat as Greece right now.
But that's a bit like saying "thanks, guys, for doubling the national debt; if you hadn't acted sooner you'd have tripled it and brought in the IMF; you're real heros!"

I still see no point in buying gold as a defence against monetary armageddon - it's no more edible than paper money, and no better at keeping the rain off your head. Unless you've got enough of the stuff to build a gold-bar igloo.

GS

I'd recommend contacting a medium format-focused dealer to order the adapter through. Generally you won't find much of a price difference, if any, from Adorama. Nothing to lose, all to gain.

US and UK might be  too far the road to hell to take the correct action.

I've done something a bit embarrassing. I bought a 120 f/4 macro on ebay, beauty in a box like new,  what a nice lens.   I have almost forgotten how nice those manual focus lenses were built.  But once I saw the aperture ring I started worrying.  It turns out it is the 645Pro version.  The price should have been a warning flag, but I didn't really check what they were going for.

It can be used  with the afdiii using the stop down mode where you flip a switch from A/M.  Also, I don't  think the camera allows the leaf back to change the camera settings with that lens on. Some big negatives, huge + is the price. Right now I see correct versions going for $900. I got this one for just over a third of that.  For studio/flash where one would meter manually and set ISO once per session. Wouldn't be  a big deal but otherwise pain in the butt very likely. It sure feels & looks good on the camera, i think i might have to adopt it. The focus ring is so precise, butter smooth. Maybe I'll keep for a while if I get tired, make a trade with keh when they get some afd versions.

Focusing manually seems quite doable on the afdiii, with a bit of back/forth it appears the center area is a bit magnified. The subject will have to be well lit. Doug just corrected me, regarding focus confirmation, it actually does work with this lens. So that's  VERY useful, and with this lens, twisting that ring is actually enjoyable.. slow and steady.

You should be able to use focus confirmation with that lens. Do you know which firmware version you have in your AFDIII? Are you using it with mirror up mode? One of the earlier AFDIII firmwares did not allow focus confirmation when using mirror up.

Well Doug,  you are right. It does do focus confirmation with this lens.

One less negative... The eyes get you in the ball park very quickly, and then >*<  can zero it in. Thanks!

Well I am experimenting with my RZs & 110mm.  Cleaned the gear.  Learned to take it apart. Kind of like a machine gun.
While waiting for an adapter to materialize.... I received two rolls of slide film with the camera, provia 100f and  64t film.
I loaded the provia, metered with the seconic and took my first ever MF film shots. Old for some new for me.
Happy Memorial Day weekend, for a change the weather is perfect.

dl28 120 f/4 macro, not really hand held but no tripod either  1/50 @f4 ISO 200.

The orchids were with flash f/11-16. I messed up on the 2nd one it was too dark, so I had to boost it in post over 3 stops... Wow still usable. This stop down metering might not be that great.
I cant see much with switch on M at f/16. If i set it the switch to A, it doesn't stop down and fires wide open.

The old school 120 macro you got is actually a really good lens.  In fact, some people are using it on their Canon DSLRs with an adapter.
