Title: Microlenses and TSE Lens
Post by: Murray Fredericks on February 21, 2010, 04:22:02 pm
Hi All,

Doe anyone know if the microlenses on the sensors of the 1d4 and the 50d affect the image when shifting using the tse lenses? This is a no no with the phase one P30 for example...

Cheers

Murray

I have never heard of any issues regarding microlenses on DSLRs having issues with Tilt/Shift lenses.

Hi Murray,

I can't answer your answer for the specific models mentioned, but if they respond anything like my full frame 24x36mm 1Ds3, then the answer is:

Despite an increased light fall-off e.g. with the TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II at f/8 when shifting from -0.16 to -0.6 F-stops at the max. 12mm horizontally shifted edge of the Full-frame image (so at 48mm off-axis), the R-B Color shading only increases from  -0.027 to -0.098 F-stops at the most extremely shifted corners (less than 0.1 stops more blue in the corners). On a cropped sensor the negative effects are even smaller.

I'd say you'll be hard pressed to see the effects, but there is some effect. The effects on resolution are stronger, so one probably will restrict oneself to less shift anyway, especially on the wide angle TS-E lenses.

Cheers,
Bart
