Henry's in Mississauga has resolved this problem, and I'm a very happy customer!
My G11 has an annoying problem.
Symptom:
* turn camera on
* camera asks for date/time to be set (like initial setup)--this happens every time I turn the camera on
Manual says:
* fully charge removable battery (I've done so)
* leave the camera; it takes 4 hours for the internal battery to recharge.
although I've done this, and reset the time/date, the problem has come back several days later.
By the way, I traded in a perfectly good G9 and grip, which I had a second battery for, to get the wonderfull screen on the G11. I refused to buy the overpriced accessory battery from Henry's when I did that. I still haven't bought one.
Question--what do you think? Return the camera? Buy a (too expensive) Canon spare battery?

ps Weather was cold; camera was protected in an insulated pocket.

Sounds like you have a faulty G11. Mine never does what you describe.

Dave:
It sounds like you should send in the camera for servicing. Don't suffer with it or give up on it.

Thanks!
I didn't know the internal battery recharge method.
I'll take it back and see what happens.

Latest....
I guess everyone's entitled to a bad day.
Took it back to the store I bought it from (won't mention names; but I'm disturbed).
Talked to a salesman who couldn't care less; stated they had no obligation to help but would send the camera back. Tried to discuss what might be the cause. No interest, and I left getting Canon's number. They're used to that because they had tear sheets to hand out! I was prepared to buy a $94 battery, and tax and see if that would help. Not now!
Perhaps the store had more important things to do.
Time to take out a twitter account!

Well I need a backup battery anyway. Found a new one and bought it for $22.45 US and shipping ($6.00 USPS). Far cry from $94 here in Mississauga!
I'll see whether this solves my problem
Canon's P&S office is Whitby; if I need to I'll get the camera to Whitby and have it checked out.
Everyone is entitled to a bad day sometimes.
I believe that photo retail sales is a tough business. Some of the stores that have provided exemplary service aren't around anymore.
Rant is off

Henry's Mississauga has solved my problem. Damon listened and has exchanged the camera for a new one. Very fair. Win-win. He asked me to purchase an extended warranty. Well worth it.
G11 suits me well.
Truly appreciate the action taken by Henry's Mississauga.

The G11, and most other cameras, has an internal backup battery that helps retain the settings while changing batteries. Losing time/date, etc., while changing the battery indicates the memory battery is dead. Sometimes these are user replaceable and sometimes it requires disassembly. I think the G11 is the latter, so it should be sent in for service and would be covered by the warranty.
