Title: Leica Special Edition to Commemorate China's Anniversary?
Post by: Colorwave on January 26, 2010, 02:45:32 am: Looks to be true. Three special edition Leicas. Not sure how well they photograph human rights violations. Commerce trumps irony. I've been waiting for a gold and red Leica, but, um, perhaps I'll sit this one out.

Wait until May this year when they will reveal the 70th anniversary of the Blitzkrieg edition...

Joking aside: it is shocking to see a camera brand so closely associated with the development of critical photojournalism honouring a ruthless regime that crushes every dissenting voice. 60 years of Red China = an estimated 30 million people killed. For Leica clearly 'pecunia non olet'...

It breaks my heart to say it because I loved my Leicas back in the sixties and seventies, but the Leica M is now so far behind the state of the art that it'll never catch up. Oh, there's a big rush at the moment to buy the M9, but it comes from rangefinder diehards and people who are convinced that owning an M9 will turn them into Cartier-Bresson. The rush will peter out pretty soon, especially considering the problems with the camera that have carried over from the catastrophic M8. Leica knows this, so they're attempting to stay in business with boutique cameras people can wear as jewelry. I wish them the best of luck, but I'm afraid it's not going to happen -- especially if they disgust their potential customers with inexcusable fiascoes like this one.
